DAVIS, Calif. - California dropped its season opener to UC Davis, 12-10, on an overcast Saturday at Aggie Stadium. Alyse Kennedy and Allie Welsh scored hat tricks for the 0-1 (0-1 in the MPSF) Golden Bears. The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak over UC Davis (1-0, 1-0 MPSF), which last defeated Cal in 2001.

Kennedy, who collected two assists, led all scorers with five points. The senior midfielder also had two yellow cards, the last coming at 51:39 with Cal trailing, 10-7. The Bears actually outscored the Aggies, 3-2, the rest of the way for the final 12-10 scoreline.

UC Davis claimed a 14-9 advantage in draw controls and subsequently outshot Cal, 27-15, for the game. The teams tied with 17 ground balls apiece.

Busy junior goalkeeper Allie Shropshire made 10 saves in 60 minutes. Attacker Christina Corsa led UC Davis in scoring with four points (1 goal, 3 assists).

Cal started the game well, with Kennedy setting up sophomore attacker Tara Arolla for the Bears' first goal of the season at the 3:12 mark of the first half.

The Aggies reeled off the next three goals, with Molly Lapolla scoring after a goalmouth scramble, Britt Farquharson tallying her first, assisted by Lapolla, and Elizabeth Datino scoring the third, giving the home team a 3-1 lead at 24:53.

Kennedy scored unassisted at 26:57 and sophomore defender Tori Harrison, who was fouled after a long run, converted an eight-meter goal with 31 seconds remaining until halftime to tie the game at 3-3.

But just 29 seconds later, Farquharson scored her second of the game to give the Aggies a 4-3 lead that it took into halftime.

Kennedy scored 37 seconds into the second half to tie the game at 4-4.

As with Cal's previous goal, UC Davis struck back quickly, as Corsa assisted Anna Geissbuhler to make the score 5-4 at 31:54. Corsa assisted Hannah Mirza on the next two goals to give the Aggies a 7-4 lead at 38:39.

Welsh's first goal, unassisted at 39:09, broke up the Aggies' run and made the score 7-5.

The Aggies then scored three straight again, with one by Geissbuhler, and two eight-meter goals by Gina Hoffmire to give UC Davis a 10-5 advantage.

Kennedy sparked another comeback, as Arolla set up the senior for the latter's second goal at 49:18. Welsh scored her second off a Kennedy assist at 50:59 to make the score 10-7.

Goals by Corsa and Molly Peterson left UC Davis ahead, 12-7, at 56:42. Prior to Peterson's goal, Cal freshman attacker Alexa Rozelle fired a shot that almost rolled over the UC Davis goalline before the Aggies corralled it.

Cal scored the game's final three goals - Welsh on an eight-meter shot at 57:31, sophomore Lauren Johnson with an eight-meter goal at 58:46 and Arolla, off sophomore midfielder Vail Horn's assist, at 59:10.

Neither team recorded a shot the rest of the way.

Cal opens its home schedule against No. 16 Ohio State at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 and then hosts five-time defending NCAA champion and top-ranked Northwestern at noon on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.
