Cal snapped a six-game losing streak away from Memorial Stadium (0-5 in true road games, loss at 2009 Poinsettia Bowl), winning a road game for the first time since defeating Stanford in the 112th Big Game at Stanford Stadium on Nov. 21, 2009.
Cal yielded 194 yards of offense to the Cougars, the third time its defense has surrendered under 200 yards this year (also UC Davis, UCLA). The Bears entered the game ranked second in the Pac-10 at 312.8 yards allowed per game.
The Bears are now one win away from becoming eligible for their eighth straight bowl appearance. Today's win also marks the 72nd victory in the career of head coach Jeff Tedford (all at Cal). He is now 72-39 (.648), putting him two victories behind the school's all-time leader, Andy Smith (74, 1916-25) and one shy of James Schaeffer (73, 1909-15).
Cal increased its all-time series lead over Washington State to 42-25-5, with its sixth consecutive win over the Cougars. The victory was also Cal's third in a row over the Cougars in Pullman.
QB Brock Mansion made his first career start at Cal and finished 14-of-24 for 171 yards in the air (incl. career-best 50 long), with two interceptions. Mansion came into the game. Mansion also rushed five times for 25 yards (career-high 28 long), the biggest rushing game by a Cal QB since Kevin Riley rushed twice for 45 yards at Washington State on Sept. 6, 2008. Mansion came into the contest with career passing numbers of 14-of-25 for 138 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He had 10 rushes for -22 yards prior to today's contest. Last week at Oregon State, Mansion was 14-of-24 game for 138 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions passing in relief of an injured Kevin Riley. He lost 53 yards on the ground on five carries.
Mansion's 28-yard rush in the second quarter was the longest by a Cal quarterback since Aaron Rodgers rushed for 36 yards at Washington on Nov. 13, 2004.
Mansion had the longest pass of his career with a 50-yard completion to WR Marvin Jones that keyed a second-quarter Cal touchdown drive.
TB Shane Vereen rushed for 112 yards on 25 carries for an updated career total of 2,553 yards (No. 9 all-time at Cal). His two-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter that was his 27th career rushing touchdown, moving him into sole possession of fifth on Cal's all-time list.
Cal's 95-yard scoring drive in the second quarter was the longest this season by the Golden Bears, two yards longer than a 93-yard touchdown drive at Oregon State on Oct. 30.
WR Jeremy Ross scored the sixth touchdown of his career (two rushing, three receiving, one punt return) on a 27-yard reverse in the third quarter.
DL Cameron Jordan finished with a career highs of 12 tackles and 4.0 tackles for loss, while adding 1.5 sacks and the third forced fumble of his career. In four career games, the senior has final career numbers against Washington State of 21 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks.
WR Marvin Jones had 101 yards receiving on four catches (50 long), his third 100+-yard-receiving game of his 2010 season, upping his team lead to 42 catches and 675 yards.
S Sean Cattouse posted his first career sack, adding three tackles and one PBU.
DB Darian Hagan had two pass breakups to make him sixth all-time at Cal with 25 in his career.
DL Trevor Guyton made his first career start and responded with career highs of seven tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
P Bryan Anger had five punts that went an average of 47.6, with three boots 50+ yards and three punted inside the 20. Anger entered game averaging 45.6 yards per punt, ahead of the single-season school-record mark of 45.3 set by Scott Tabor in 1987.
