CALIFORNIA HEAD COACH JEFF TEDFORD
On WSU QB Jeff Tuel
"We put a lot of pressure on the passer at times. Unfortunately he got out of it a lot of times. That guy is a very good player. I said it throughout the week he can not only beat you with his arm but he can beat you with his legs and he is a great competitor."
On the team's first road victory
"It's going to be a nice plane ride home. It's been a thing, obviously, that a lot of people have been talking about and this is our last road game so it was nice to get a victory today. All wins are great wins."
CALIFORNIA PLAYERS
QUARTERBACK BROCK MANSION
On his career-long 28-yard run play
"It turned into a huge play for us. That kind of got our confidence up, the sideline erupted a little bit and just set us up for another big play."
On preparing for Oregon next week
"I'm going to prepare the same way. I have to keep that even mind, it doesn't matter who it is you have to come out and prepare as hard as you can to be ready for anything they might do."
WIDE RECEIVER JEREMY ROSS
On getting a road win
"It is important, especially this win today and it shows how we keep fighting. It will give us momentum in our next home games."
On Washington State
"Besides the record this year, they have challenged a lot of team and played great football. It didn't matter that we were playing Washington State, we just didn't want to lose, period."
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN CAMERON JORDAN
On Washington State
"They really came out fighting today, fighting for every yard with everything they had. You could feel it. To play the way they did today was outstanding."
On WSU QB Jeff Tuel
"He had some nice moves and cuts, I was impressed. I knew he was a good runner, I wasn't expecting what I saw."
On DL Trevor Guyton
" He was like a hot knife in butter. He beat me many times and it was nice to see. He played outstanding today."
On game next week vs. Oregon
"Clearly that is a lot of speed coming over here and I am excited to see what their offensive line can handle. They are number one, I'd like to put them to the test."
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN TREVOR GUYTON
On his play today
"A lot of things went right for me today, plus it was my homecoming so I had to show up big."
On WSU QB Jeff Tuel
"He was shifty, I wasn't expecting all he brought today. He can move."
WASHINGTON STATE COACH PAUL WULFF
General statement
"We are struggling to capitalize on opportunities and we do get them. That happened today for our offense. That was tough. We had a lot of opportunities crossing the 50 whether it be a turnover or us just getting the ball across there. It's critical holding penalties and chop block penalties and a lot of different things that pulled us out of there which has happened two weeks in a row. We got across midfield five or six times and not getting any points. We are not a very mature team. It is frustrating. We don't know how to handle ourselves when we're doing some good things."
On the WSU offense, which has been moving ball against good defenses until the past two weeks
"We have faced two very good defenses. I think Arizona State has the most talent in the league on defense and Cal is the statistically second in the conference. Our protection today was not great. Jeff [Tue]) was being pressured tremendously. The two big corners that were pressing our two outside receivers Jared and Marquis all game negated us. Jeff had to hang onto the ball longer than we should have at times and that got to us. They did a good job of messing our timing up. We weren't strong enough against their corners to get the win. Our running game has to be better."
On how much this loss hurts for him
It hurts a lot. This one hurts as much as any by a long ways, because we were right in it, doing the right things. We shot ourselves in the foot. We did a poor job in the third quarter, coming out flat on offense and defense and allowed that easy score that was the turning point. The real critical play was when they converted on that third and 20-something when they carried half our defense 15 or 20 yards.
WASHINGTON STATE PLAYERS
QUARTERBACK JEFF TUEL
On the cause of the team's losses
"It's just tough, just executing and different things here and there, but you can't just pinpoint one thing and say `that's not clicking, that's the reason why we're losing,' so it's tough."
On not taking advantage of the defense's play
"It's very frustrating because something that the coaches hammer us on is winning the turnover battle first of all. We got a couple field goals out of turnovers, but we couldn't get any touchdowns. It's definitely frustrating because the defense played their butts off today."
On whether he was rushed when attempting deep throws
"A little bit at times, for sure you get a guy coming right at you or you get pressured and you need to side step or move around it to try and throw the ball, or hurry. It's tough at times, but once again, that just comes with the position. If you want to be great, you've got to be great at those things."
CORNERBACK AIRE JUSTIN
On how frustrating this game was
"It's a hard loss, really disappointing. I know one thing we didn't give up and we kept fighting. We have to pay attention to that, just keep on pushing, work hard...get better."
LINEBACKER CJ MIZELL
On the play in which WR/PR Jeremy Ross and his teammates pushed forward to convert a 3rd-and-20
"We were trying to keep him up to get the ball out... I think it was more of us pushing him, we should have just taken him down and been smarter."
