INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -
For the second consecutive week the No. 2 California Golden Bears defeated No. 15 Wisconsin in a varsity race. Last week at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Badgers finished sixth behind first-place Cal.
In the varsity eight race, Cal moved out immediately to lead by three seats after 500 meters and about six seats at 1,000 meters. Wisconsin tried to capture Cal's lead but was unsuccessful. The Bears finished the race strong, winning by more than one length.
In the second varsity eight race, Cal started slowly as Wisconsin moved out quickly in the first half of the race. By the 1,000-meter mark Wisconsin held a one-length lead that the Badgers held until the final 250 meters. Cal made a strong charge but could not catch Wisconsin.
The afternoon races, both the varsity eight and second varsity eight, against No. 11 Notre Dame and Purdue were postponed due to unrowable conditions.
"We anticipated tough conditions and some good competition out here," said Cal head coach Dave O'Neill. "The varsity eight was impressive and rowed a composed and focused race. They are a strong crew, but it's more important to row as a unit in such a strong tailwind. They got the job done. The second varsity lost to a very good Wisconsin crew; we'll take this defeat and learn from it. We expect to be tested tomorrow."
