COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The California field hockey team (3-5, 0-0 NorPac) fell to American (6-0, 0-0 Patriot League) 3-1 Sunday afternoon in College Park, Md., at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Maryland's campus.
Cal jumped out with an early lead on the Eagles when senior midfielder Chilly Banuelos scored a goal; it was off a shot from in front on the net. Banuelos also recorded four shots, including two on goal. Junior Valentina Godfrid collected six shot attempts and Jamie Nance tallied one attempt.
American went on a scoring rout in the second period to secure the victory for the Eagles. American's Denise Infante scored one goal and two were scored by Maureen Daniel.
Cal goalkeeper Veronica Sykes tallied a season-high eight saves in Sunday's contest. Five of Sykes' saves came in the first period and three in the second.
The Bears will take the field next when they host Stanford on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Berkeley. Match time is slated for 5 p.m. (PST) at Maxwell Family Field.
