NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale scored the first six goals of Saturday's game against California en route to a 16-6 victory over the Bears at Johnson Field. Senior midfielder and Tewaaraton Award candidate Miles Whitman scored seven goals for the Bulldogs, moving her into second on Yale's career goals list with 170.
Whitman scored the contest's first goal just 44 seconds after the opening draw and put up another two for Yale (9-4, 3-2 in the Ivy League) within the first 3:18. California (6-8, 1-1 in the MPSF) got on the board in the 14th minute when junior midfielder Molly Brady scored on a free position shot, 6-1. The Bears got another goal in the 29th minute from freshman midfielder Elizabeth Reifsnyder, with an assist from freshman midfielder Laura Cavallo, 7-2. Yale scored once more before halftime to take an 8-2 lead into the second half.
Brady scored a second free position goal 1:19 into the second stanza for California but then saw four straight Yale goals put the game out of reach, 12-3, with 17:36 remaining in the match. Sophomore attacker Leanne Zilioli notched a free position goal for the Bears in the 44th minute, 12-4, but Cal would find itself down 14-4 before its next goal and 15-5 with 7:18 remaining on the clock.
Freshman goalie Hilary Lynch recorded 16 saves on 38 shots for the Bears. Yale's sophomore goalkeeper Lonnie Sarnell made nine saves while facing 20 California shots. The Bears committed 24 turnovers, 12 in each half, to Yale's 17. Yale continued its long Senior Day with a second game against visiting Monmouth later Saturday evening.
The Bears return to home to California this week, traveling north to face UC Davis on Saturday, April 24, at 1:00 p.m. for a MPSF match-up with the Aggies.
