Bears Earn 12 Wins at ITA All-American Championships

California women's tennis senior Mao Mushika advanced to the singles Round of 32 in the main draw and reached the consolation Round of 16, and Mushika and junior Naomi Xu advanced to the doubles Round of 32 in the main draw last week at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C.
Mushika opened the singles main draw with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over SMU's Sophie Llewellyn before falling to Baylor's Zuzanna Kubacha 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 32. Mushika then won two consolation matches, defeating Maryland's Oliwia Orlinska 6-4, 6-3 and Kansas' Kyoka Kubo 6-4, 6-3. In the consolation Round of 16, Mushika fell to Harvard's Stephanie Yakoff 6-2, 6-2.
Mushika and Xu advanced through the pre-qualifying and qualifying draws to reach the doubles main draw. The Bears opened with two pre-qualifying victories, defeating South Carolina's Pietra Rivoli and Jana Stojanova 6-3, 6-4 and LSU's No. 9 Aya El Aouni and Addison Lanton 6-4, 3-6 [10-4].
In the qualifying draw, Xu and Mushika earned another two wins, defeating South Carolina's Anna Bella Bergquist Larsson and Kaitlyn Carnicella 6-1, 1-6 [10-2] and Mississippi State's Gianna Oboniye and Athina Pitta 6-3, 6-4. The Bears lost in their first main-draw match, falling to Baylor's Zuzanna Kubacha and Kenna Erickson 7-5, 7-5 in the Round of 32.
Freshman Nika Hurkacz opened the tournament with her first collegiate win over Michigan State's Ellie Blackford, 7-6[3], 6-1. Hurkacz followed this with another win against Sacramento State's Elena Mercioiu, 6-4, 5-5 (inj.). Hurkacz beat LSU's No. 13 Tegan Bush 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the qualifying draw.
Hurkacz fell to Texas Tech's Valerie Shue 6-1, 6-2 in the qualifying draw, but won her consolation match against the University of San Diego's Vilma Krebs Kyllested 1-6, 6-2, 7-6[6].
Xu also competed in the singles pre-qualifying draw, opening with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marshall University's Alina Mokrynska before falling to Louisville's Berta Miret 2-6, 7-6[1], 6-3.
The Bears earned 12 total wins in their first competition under first-year head coach Maggie Kane. They return to the Bay Area for the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco, Thursday through Sunday.
