Bears Score Season High In First-Round Win
STANFORD – The No. 4 California men's water polo team scored a season-high 20 goals to defeat No. 15 Loyola Marymount on Friday in the first round of the Overnght MPSF Invitational at Avery Aquatics Center.
Seven Golden Bears registered multi-goal efforts led by sophomore Beso Akhvlediani and senior Chase Wilson who each had a hat trick. Akhvlediani added a pair of assists to lead all players with five points.
On the defensive end the cage was shared by both Aran Pina and Riley Clansen who each secured six saves. Pina earned the start and recorded a steal in the first half while Clansen entered in the third quarter and was a perfect 4-for-4 on penalty saves.
Cal (7-0) opened with a dominant first quarter outscoring the Lions (4-3) 6-1 to take an early lead that it would not relinquish. The Bears scored another six goals in the second quarter giving them a 12-4 lead heading into the half.
The Cal lead stretched as high as 12 early in the fourth quarter when Wilson scored his third goal of the evening to secure his first hat trick of the season.
The Bears will now face the winner of this evening's battle between No. 6 UC Davis and No. 13 UC Irvine tomorrow at 9:20 a.m. PT on Overnght.
