Casey Hill Joins Cal Men’s Basketball As Assistant Coach

Hill Brings Pro Coaching Experience To Bears Program
Cal men's basketball head coach Mark Madsen has added Casey Hill as an assistant to the Golden Bears coaching staff for the coming 2026-27 season. Hill joins the program after serving five years as an NBA assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans. Prior to that, he served as head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors, reaching consecutive D-League Finals and winning the championship in 2015.
"Casey is one of the best Xs and Os coaches in the country," Madsen said of Hill. "He is unbelievable with players. He has learned under Doc Rivers, Willie Green, Stan Van Gundy and countless others. As we went through the interview process, I was blown away by Casey's knowledge of the game and his deep understanding of emerging basketball trends. Casey will have a significant role strategically and will be heavily involved with in-game adjustments."
Hill's coaching career spans 16 seasons, having begun as an assistant with the Tokyo Apaches and then the Santa Cruz Warriors. After one season as assistant, he took over as head coach for Santa Cruz. Two years after winning the D-League title with the Warriors, Hill was hired as head coach of the Agua Caliente Clippers before joining the Los Angeles Clippers staff as an assistant coach in 2018. Hill moved to the Pelicans in 2020, where he has served as an assistant for the past five seasons.
"I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to join a great coaching staff at such a prestigious university," Hill said. "Coach Madsen is the type of coach and person that I want to work with on the college level, and I look forward to bringing my experience on the professional level to the Golden Bears."
A native of Lawrence, Kansas, Hill played college basketball at Trinity University, reaching the 2005 Division II Elite Eight and winning two conference titles as a Tiger. Hill hails from a family of basketball coaches. His father, Bob Hill, has been a college, NBA and international coach. His brother, Cameron, is the head women's coach at Trinity, and his other brother, Chris is a high school coach at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas, Texas.
Hill joins a Cal program that is coming off a strong 2025-26 campaign in which the Bears recorded the most wins in a season (22) since 2016 and their first postseason win since 2014. Last season's squad also notched eight games with 90-plus points scored and had five players ranked in top-100 national statistical categories. This year, Cal has nine returning Bears joined by nine newcomers ready for competition in 2026-27.
