Cal Track & Field Ready For NCAA West Regionals
21 Bears Seek Qualification To Nationals
California track & field's 21-athlete group will compete at the NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Arkansas, this week, with each individual hoping to earn a berth to the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. Competition begins at John McDonnell Field on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. PT/9:30 a.m. CT with the men's hammer throw. The men's events will take place Wednesday and Friday, while the women's events are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday.
Those who place in the top 12 in their events this week will punch their tickets to the national championships on June 10-13, which will be held for the third year in a row at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Track events are separated into first rounds (Wednesday-Thursday) and quarterfinals (Friday-Saturday), with the semifinals and final set to take place in Eugene. Field event competitors will have three attempts each to earn a top-12 spot to advance to the final at Hayward.
Throwers
Valentina Savva (hammer),
Audrey Jacobs (hammer) and
Lucija Leko (shot put) have each found success at this level, with all three advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2025 (Jacobs for the second time). Both Savva and Jacobs have Second-Team All-America honors to their name. Pole vaulter
Ali Sahaida will look to advance to her second consecutive national championship stage, having placed fifth indoors this past February for First-Team All-America status.
Last time out, Cal picked up nine All-ACC honors at the ACC Outdoor Championships on May 14-16, led by Savva's meet-record hammer performance of 69.68m (228-7). Both
Kai Anderson (pole vault, 5.43m/17-9.75) and
Caitlyn Johnson (6.21m/20-4.5) crushed Cal's freshman records in their respective events, while
Saqqara Ruffin (13.34, Cal Top 6) and
Inara Ukawuba (13.37, Cal Top 7) bettered their wind-legal PRs to improve their program top-10 times.
