Cal Bested By No. 3 Georgia Tech

Bears Suffer Sweep

BERKELEY — The California baseball team was swept by No. 3 Georgia Tech on Saturday dropping game three of the series 9-3 at Stu Gordon Stadium.

As they did all series, the Yellow Jackets (26-6, 12-3) took the lead before the Golden Bears (14-16, 1-11) ever came to bat, hitting a lead-off solo home run on the fourth pitch of the game.

Cal had a number of barrels the first time through the lineup but was unlucky with every hard-hit ball going right to a Jacket fielder. The Bears only got one baserunner aboard through the first five innings as Georgia Tech posted three runs in the third and another five in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead.

The Bears avoided their first shutout of the season with their biggest inning of the weekend posting a three-run, two-out rally in the eighth inning. Daniel Murillo and Lawson Olmstead had back-to-back RBI singles and Cade Campbell collected the team's second extra-base hit of the game with an RBI double.

Ethan Kodama had a great outing with the bat going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, and a run scored. It was the sophomore's first multi-hit effort in conference and his first since Cal faced CSU Bakersfield exactly a month ago. Kodama reached base safely in all three games with the Jackets collecting a hit last night and a walk in game one.

Sophomore Gavin Eddy (4-2) took the ball to start and was charged with the loss but had a solid outing allowing four runs through five innings of work, which was the best performance by a Cal starter in the series. He scattered six hits and a pair of walks while striking out four.

The final four arms that closed out the game for the Bears combined for three shutout innings including Ryan Spalliero and Jordy Lopez who each pitched a full inning. Spalliero has come alive as of late as a reliable bullpen option for the Bears having not allowed a single earned run in his last six appearances dating back to game one with North Carolina on March 13.

The Bears now have their sights set on a Monday matchup at San Francisco before heading back to the east coast to face Pitt this weekend.
