Cal Knocks Off Two More Ranked Opponents
LOS ANGELES – The No. 10 California beach volleyball team passed another couple of stiff tests Saturday, outlasting two more ranked opponents to close out play in the MPSF Coast To Coast Classic at USC.
The Golden Bears (8-5) began the day by taking down No. 16 Grand Canyon 3-2 then followed up with a 4-1 triumph over No. 18 Washington.
Cal's top two pairs – No. 1 Emma Donley and Portia Sherman and No. 2 Marilu Pally and Grace Hong – won both of their matches Saturday, but it wasn't easy. Donley and Sherman went into extra points in both sets of their victory over the Lopes, ultimately prevailing 26-24, 22-20. Pally and Hong were taken to the limit against the Huskies before finally capping off a 21-13, 19-21, 15-13 win.
Each dual featured two three-set matches, and the Bears went 3-1 in them.
Cal went 3-1 in the tournament, with its only loss coming to No. 3 USC. The Bears also defeated No. 13 LSU on Friday.
Cal returns to Southern California next weekend for the East Meets West Invitational in Manhattan Beach. The Bears will take on LSU, No. 8 Arizona State, Florida International and No. 5 Texas.
