Cal Splits Doubleheader With Notre Dame

Bears Drop Fourth ACC Series

SOUTH BEND – The California softball team split its doubleheader against Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon at Melissa Cook Stadium, taking game one 10-2 before falling 9-7 in eight innings in the finale.

Game 1: Cal 10, Notre Dame 2

The Golden Bears' bats came alive in the opener as Cal scored 10 runs on 12 hits and swiped six bases in the win. Kayla Lee led the way with four hits and two stolen bases, while Kayli Counts and Natalie Marshall each drove in a game-high three runs.

Notre Dame struck first in the opening inning with an RBI single through the right side to take a 1-0 lead.

Marshall tied the game in the second with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Cal broke things open in the fourth, plating five runs to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Carly Raven drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Counts followed with a two-run single, and Marshall added an RBI double down the left field line.

Madison Rey doubled home Lee in the fifth to extend the Bears' lead to 7-1.

The Fighting Irish added a run in the fifth, but Cal answered with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to seal the 10-2 win.

Game 2: Notre Dame 9, Cal 7 (8 innings)

The Bears continued to wreak havoc on the basepaths in game two. Lee stole second and third before scoring on Rey's fielder's choice in the first inning to give Cal an early lead.

Notre Dame answered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to move in front 3-1.

Cal cut the deficit to 3-2 in the second when Kyndal Todd scored on a Fighting Irish throwing error.

Raven gave the Bears a 4-3 advantage in the third with a two-run homer, and Gator Robinson later drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to push the lead to 5-3.

Notre Dame scored twice in the fourth to even the game at 5-5.

Raven struck again in the sixth, launching her second two-run homer of the day to put Cal back in front, 7-5.

The Fighting Irish scored once in the sixth and once in the seventh to force extra innings before a walk-off two-run homer in the eighth lifted Notre Dame to the 9-7 win.

Cal is now 12-25 overall and 2-10 in ACC play. The Bears return to action Thursday when they host Louisville in conference play.
