LOS ANGELES - The California lacrosse team (1-1) led by a pair of goals in the first quarter and hung tough for most of the opening half before USC (1-0) pulled away for a 16-9 victory in a nonconference game between the former Pac-12 rivals on a warm Sunday afternoon at Rawlinson Stadium. The game was the first lacrosse contest hosted by the venue after previously serving as the home of the Trojans' men's and women's soccer programs.
Courtney Wong and
Emily Moes each had four goals for the Bears with Wong's a career-high and Moes' a season best. Both players finished with five points, also adding a single assist each along with
Willow Cyr and
Josie Lillquist.
After scoring six goals in the game's first 21 minutes on hat tricks by both Wong and Moes gave the Bears a 6-4 lead, Cal was able to find the back of the net just three more times over the remainder of the contest with both players adding one more score in the second half along with one from
Ashleigh Masterson. The Bears fell behind by four goals on the Trojans' first score of the second half and were never able to crawl any closer.
Vivian Leuthold led eight USC players with four goals to match Wong and Moes for game-high honors. Reese Robinson and Kaylee Fravert tacked on three goals each, while Skylar May contributed two, and Sydney Stewart, Hannah Barron, Emma Bunting and Anna Regan picked up one apiece. Bunting added four assists and Fravert had two as each totaled a team-high-tying five points. Stewart, Barron and Maggie Ramsey added one assist each.
Charlotte Morton eanred the win in goal for the Trojans, turning back nine of Cal's 16 shots on goal.
The Bears will host Florida State (1-0, 0-0 ACC) in their home opener and first ACC home contest of the 2026 season at California Memorial Stadium on Friday (3 p.m., ACCNX/ESPN+).
