EUGENE, Ore. - The California lacrosse team (3-1) continued to roll with a 14-9 nonconference win at previously unbeaten Oregon (3-1) on a chilly Thursday afternoon at Pape Field.
Josie Lillquist and
Courtney Wong led the way with six points each as Lillquist equaled a career-high five goals and added one assist, while Wong scored two goals and assisted on four. Wong also had a career and game-high nine draw controls.
Avery Hoeft also had two goals and two assists, while
Brynn Gallagher's two goals marked the first multiple-goal game of her career.
Katie Bloomer,
Emily Moes and
Katie McMullen each had a single goal for the Bears with Moes and
Alina Hsu adding one assist each.
Bloomer led the Bears' defensive effort with a career-high and game-high three caused turnovers, while
Clara Page and
Lulu Murphy had a game-high-tying four ground balls with the number also a career-high for Murphy, who improved to 3-1 in goal for the Bears and recorded six saves.
Emma Ing, Rachel Pallo and Anna Simmons each had a pair of goals for the Ducks with Simmons also picking up an assist. Lyla Hurley, Gabby Santucci and Avery Young added a single goal apiece with Young also assisting on a pair. Lexi Jenkins added one assist and Kate Shields (3-1) took the loss in goal for the Ducks.
Cal jumped out to a hot start with three goals in the first quarter and maintained at least a two-goal advantage the rest of the way. The Bears led 7-3 at the intermission, scored the first two goals of the second half and eventually built an eight-goal advantage with a 12-4 margin at the end of the third period. Oregon scored the first three goals of the fourth period to cut Cal's lead to 12-7 but could never get any closer.
"We got off to a strong start and were able to build momentum throughout the game," head coach
Jennifer Wong said. "I'm incredibly proud of our team and the individuals who stepped up with outstanding performances. Our effort was led by
Josie Lillquist and
Courtney Wong, whose leadership and execution set the tone. Defensively, we played as a cohesive unit and made Oregon work for all of their scoring chances."
"What led to this win today was the energy from both our defense and our offense,"
Courtney Wong added. "We really fed off each other and felt connected. The offense put the ball away and took care of it, and on defense we had a lot of knockdowns and saves."
Cal's win over Oregon was its sixth straight against the Ducks dating back to the last Oregon win in the series in Eugene in 2022.
"We've never lost to Oregon and obviously going into the game we didn't want to break that streak," said Lillquist, a senior whose record against Oregon is 5-0.
With three wins in their first four matches, Cal is off to its best start since the 2007 team also opened with a 3-1 record. The 2003 squad posted the best start in school history at 8-1 by winning eight straight games after dropping its season opener. Both teams were coached by the program's first head coach, Jill Malko, who currently serves as an analyst on the team's broadcasts of home games on ACCNX/ESPN+.
Cal returns to action Monday by hosting UC Davis in a nonconference match at California Memorial Stadium. First draw is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ACCNX/ESPN+.
