Twidale, Perkins Pace Bears Offensively
The California women's basketball team got its first taste of playing someone not in a Bears' jersey when it hosted reigning national champs UCLA as part of the Jason Kidd Foundation x Verderia Tipoff on Wednesday night at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears fell 87-53 in front of crowd of nearly 4,000 fans which included NBA Hall of Famers Jason Kidd and Gary Payton.
Lulu Twidale led the way for the Bears with 13 points which included three 3-pointers while rookie Ruby Perkins impressed in her unofficial debut with 12 points (on 4-8 shooting) while adding five assists.
The Bears stayed within striking distance for most of the first half highlighted by a sequence when Naya Ojukwu blocked a shot and Perkins grabbed the rebound and took it the distance for a nifty in and out layup finish over the UCLA defender with 3:17 to go in the second quarter to cut the deficit to six points. The Bruins responded by closing the half on a 7-0 run to go up by 13 points going into the break.
Cal continued to battle in the third quarter to keep the game close as Perkins had 10 points in the period alone. She had a stretch run scoring eight of the Bears' 10 points over a two-and-a-half-minute span to bring them to within eight points with just under three minutes to go in the third. Once again, UCLA responded with a run to close the quarter scoring nine unanswered to take back control.
UCLA's Elina Aarnisalo led the game with 20 points and seven assists.
