Cal Suffers First Road Loss At Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Luka Lukic scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season and the California men's soccer team dominated much of the game on Wednesday night at Harvard, but the Golden Bears fell 3-1 to the Crimson in their first road loss of the year.

Cal saw its record move to 3-2-1 – including 3-1-0 on the road – after the nonconference game. Harvard improved its record to 2-1.

Andreas Savva scored from a tough angle in the first minute to give Harvard a 1-0 lead. Cal outshot the Crimson 12-1 and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half but trailed at halftime.

Savva scored his second goal of the game in the 76th minute and then assisted Dylan Tellado – who assisted on Savva's first goal – on a goal in the 78th minute to give Harvard a 3-0 lead.

A free kick set up Cal's goal at 82:40. Alfredo Ortiz took the set piece from the left flank and found Wisdom Onuoma to the right of the Harvard box. The defender headed the ball into the penalty area to Lukic, who was deep in the six-yard box. The striker chested the ball down to himself and slammed the ball into the net.

The Bears took four more shots, with Onuoma and Kieran Bracken Serra forcing saves out of goalkeeper Lucian Wood. But the final whistle blew with the score 3-1.

Cal head coach Leonard Griffin bemoaned the Bears' fate despite enjoying much of the possession at Jordan Field, where they also outshot Harvard 23-9 and held a 15-0 advantage in corner kicks.

"It's extremely frustrating," he said. "At the same time we're trying to remain positive with the way we're playing, the chances we're creating, with dominating possession of the ball and the tempo of the game. We're going to continue to stick with what we're doing and learn from our shortcomings. The floodgates will open at some point."

The Bears return to ACC action on Sunday, when they host No. 19 Duke at 2 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley.
