Multiple Former Cal Players Make Impact In NFL Season-Openers

Former Cal football walk-on Jake Tonges became a household name on Sunday after his acrobatic touchdown catch on San Francisco's final drive gave the 49ers' a 17-13 season-opening win at Seattle. Other highlights during Week 1 included:
  • Aaron Rodgers' four touchdown passes while leading a fourth-quarter comeback in a 34-32 win in his Pittsburgh debut at the New York Jets, his former team
  • Interceptions by Camryn Bynum (Indianapolis) and Jaylinn Hawkins (New England)
  • Keenan Allen's seven receptions, including a touchdown catch, in his return to the Los Angeles Chargers in 27-21 win over Kansas City in a game played in Sao Paulo, Brazil
  • NFL debuts for five Cal players in third-year player Daniel Scott (Indianapolis … missed first two years with injuries), as well as rookies Teddye Buchanan (Baltimore), Marcus Harris (Tennessee), Nohl Williams (Kansas City) and Craig Woodson (New England)
  • Hawkins and Woodson formed the starting safety tandem for New England
  • Cameron Jordan's 1.5 sacks in a 20-13 home loss to Arizona in the opener of his 15th NFL season all with New Orleans to give him 123.0 sacks in his career
Here's what to look out for in Week 2 …
  • Cameron Jordan will tie Drew Brees with his next start (No. 228) for the all-time leader with New Orleans
  • Aaron Rodgers has 507 career TD passes and is one short of Brett Favre (508) for fourth on the NFL's all-time list
  • Rodgers will play his first home game for Pittsburgh and his next start will be the 250th of his career
  • Keenan Allen is just 19 receptions shy of becoming only the 16th player in NFL history to record 1,000 in his career
  • In addition to Rodgers, others to play their first home games for their current teams are Teddye Buchanan (Baltimore), Ashtyn Davis (Miami), Marcus Harris (Tennessee) and Nohl Williams (Kansas City)

Keenan Allen – WR, Los Angeles Chargers (1-0): Allen had seven receptions for 68 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown grab, in a 27-21 Week 1 win over Kansas City in a game played in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in his return to the Chargers after one season with Chicago in 2024.

Bryan Anger – P, Dallas (0-1): Anger punted twice for 87 yards (43.5 avg, 43.5 net) in a 24-20 Week 1 road loss at Philadelphia. He had a long punt of 49 yards and pinned the Eagles inside their 20-yard line once.

Chris Brooks – RB, Green Bay (1-0): Brooks played off the bench in a 27-13 Week 1 home win over Detroit, contributing one rush for 1 yard and one reception for 2 yards, as well as three tackles over 16 special teams plays with the latter second on the team.

*Teddye Buchanan – LB, Baltimore (0-1): Buchanan had four tackles off the bench in his NFL debut in a 41-40 Week 1 loss at Buffalo.

*Camryn Bynum – S, Indianapolis (1-0): Bynum had three tackles, one interception that he returned 14 yards and two pass defenses in his debut with Indianapolis in a 33-8 Week 1 home win over Miami after signing with the Colts in the offseason.
Week 2 – Sun., Sept. 14, 1:05 pm – vs. Denver (1-0) – CBS

Ashtyn Davis – S, Miami (0-1): Davis had one tackle and one tackle for loss in his Miami debut in a 33-8 Week 1 loss at Indianapolis. Davis signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins prior to the 2025 season after spending his first five campaigns with the New York Jets.

Jared Goff – QB, Detroit (0-1): Goff completed 31-of-39 passes for 225 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a 27-13 Week 1 loss at Green Bay.

Cameron Goode – LB, Miami (0-1): Goode played on 11 special teams plays in a 33-8 Week 1 loss at Indianapolis.

Jaylinn Hawkins – S, New England (0-1): Hawkins filled up the stat sheet with five tackles, one interception that he returned 1 yard, 1.0 sack (-5 yards), two tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry and one pass defense in a 20-13 Week 1 home loss to Las Vegas. Hawkins started at safety alongside fellow Pro Bear Craig Woodson.

Elijah Hicks – S, Chicago (0-1): Hicks had two special teams tackles while playing in a team-high-tying 25 special teams plays in a 27-24 Week 1 home loss to Minnesota.

Cameron Jordan – DE, New Orleans (0-1): Jordan began his 15th NFL season (all with New Orleans) with three tackles, 1.5 sacks (14.5 yards), two tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and one pass defense in a 20-13 Week 1 home loss to Arizona.

Patrick Mekari – OL, Jacksonville (1-0): Mekari started at right guard and played in 64 of 66 offensive snaps in his Jacksonville debut in a 26-10 Week 1 home win over Carolina. Mekari signed a three-year contract with Jacksonville before the 2025 season after playing his first six NFL campaigns with Baltimore.

Nikko Remigio – WR/RET, Kansas City (0-1): Remigio had two kickoff returns for 56 yards, including a 34-yarder, while adding two punt returns for 7 yards in a 27-21 Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in a game played in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Aaron Rodgers – QB, Pittsburgh (1-0): The 41-year-old Rodgers did it once again by beginning his 21st NFL season with a 34-32 Week 1 road win in the house of his former team, the New York Jets. Rodgers completed 22-of 30 passes for 244 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 136.7 rating in his Pittsburgh debut that was his best in a game since the 2022 campaign. The Steelers trailed 26-17 heading into the fourth quarter before Rodgers led Pittsburgh to 17 points with a pair of touchdown passes in the final 15 minutes. The fourth-quarter comeback was the 24th of Rodgers' career.

Daniel Scott – S, Indianapolis (1-0): After missing all of his first two seasons with injuries, the 26-year-old Scott made his NFL debut by participating in 18 plays (9 defense, 9 special teams) in a 33-8 Week 1 home win over Miami..

Jake Tonges, TE, San Francisco (1-0): Tonges was the hero in a 17-13 Week 1 win at Seattle with a game-winning acrobatic 4-yard touchdown catch in the end zone. Tonges had three receptions for 15 yards, including the score on the 49ers' final drive while filling in for an injured George Kittle. The three catches and the touchdown were the first of his NFL career.

Nohl Williams – CB, Kansas City (0-1): Williams had two tackles and downed a punt at the Los Angeles Chargers' 3-yard line while seeing action in 20 plays, all on special teams, in his NFL debut in a 27-21 Week 1 loss to the Chargers in a game played in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
