The California field hockey team outshot Monmouth 20-14 in its season opener, but only had eight on goal compared to the Hawks' 12 and fell 7-2 at So Sweet a Cat Field in West Long Branch, NJ on Friday morning.
Monmouth (1-0) opened the scoring with a goal 39 seconds into the first period but was held scoreless the remainder of the period. The Hawks were up 3-0 before the Golden Bears (0-1) got on the board when
Victoria Beiro scored Cal's first goal of the season (assisted by
Lieve Schalk and
Zara Schmitz) at the 6:54 mark in the second period. Monmouth was able to score one more goal with 37 seconds left in the half to go up 4-1 at the break.
The Bears' next goal came at the 13:37 mark in the fourth period when
Josefina Moyano set up
Maya Hoepfner for the score.
Liz Klompmaker led all players with seven shots (two on goal) and Cal had six penalty corners compared to Monmouth's five.
"We may be a little surprised by the score line, but we are confident that the circumstances that led to this outcome will not repeat themselves," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead said. "I am happy with the team for sticking together through a tough test. They kept their work rate up and worked through to the end. I would be more concerned if their non hockey agreements fell apart. We are fine. On to Delaware."
Cal next plays at Delaware on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT.
