Cal Heads To Corvallis For Season Opener

The California football team will meet former conference foe, Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon, for the 2025 season opener. The Golden Bears and the Beavers will kick off at Reser Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT, with the game set to be aired live on ESPN. It will be the 88th all-time meeting between the two programs on the gridiron and the 30th consecutive.

BEARS 'N BEAVS
- Familiar former conference foes California and Oregon State will square off in Corvallis for the first time in three years, having last met in Reser Stadium on Nov. 12, 2022.
- The meeting is the 88th all-time between the Beavers and Golden Bears and the 30th consecutive. The two programs have met on the gridiron every season since 1995.
- Cal leads the all-time series, 40-37, with Oregon State leading, 17-13, in games played in Corvallis.
- The Bears and the Beavers last met in Berkeley in 2024, when Cal handled OSU 44-7 in a nonconference tilt on Oct. 26. It was the first nonconference matchup since 1960 when Cal was in the AAWU and OSU played as an independent.
- OSU has captured the last two wins in Corvallis, beating the Bears 38-10 in 2022 and 31-27 in 2020.
- OSU alumnus and former Beavers' DC Keith Heyward will be back on the sideline at Reser Stadium, this time wearing Blue & Gold as a defensive backs coach for the Bears. This is Heyward's second stint in Berkeley, previously serving as the outside linebackers coach in 2021.
- Saturday's contest will be the season opener for both programs.

- Is playing in its second season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
- Is playing its first of four games scheduled for kickoff under the lights and shown live on ESPN.
- Has won its season opener for the last three consecutive seasons.
- Has won two of the three season-opening road contests in the Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox Era, including his career-first win over North Carolina (35-30) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and a 58-21 win at North Texas in 2023. Cal dropped its first game of the season against UCLA in 2020 when the Bears' originally scheduled season premiere in Berkeley was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

- Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is only the second true freshman to be named the Bears' starting quarterback for a season opener since Jared Goff arrived in Berkeley in 2013, on his way to becoming the No. 1 overall NFL draft pick in 2016.
- As a senior at Campbell High School in Ewa Beach, Hawai'i, Sagapolutele completed 213-of-302 passes for 3,404 yards and 46 TDs with just 3 interceptions. He notched six games with 300+ yards passing and two games of 400+ yards passing. He also tallied five games with six TD passes and eight contests with multiple TD passes in 2024.
- In total, he recorded 10,653 yards passing in his prep career from 2022-24 to set Hawai'i all-time passing yards record, surpassing both Dillon Gabriel (10,048 yds) and Tua Tagovailoa (8,158)
- He was rated as a 5-star recruit and the No. 19 overall player (No. 4 QB) by On3 and a 4-star recruit according to 247, ESPN and Rivals. He was a 2024 Elite 11 finalist and a 2024 Elite 11 Rail Shot Challenge winner.
 
Captain Cade
- Junior inside linebacker Cade Uluave will captain the Bears for the 2025 season.
- The 2024 All-ACC Honorable Mention linebacker tallied 71 tackles, three TFL, three passes defended, one interception and a half sack in only nine games played.
- He recorded six games with eight or more tackles and three games with 11 or more last season.
- Uluave and three other teammates will serve as game captains, which will be announced weekly ahead of each contest.
 
Ron Returns Home
– Former consensus All-American for the Bears Ron Rivera returns to Berkeley in Cal Football's newly created General Manager role, which has complete oversight over the football program.
- He was inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994 just over a decade after playing four seasons (1980-83) for the Golden Bears. He capped his collegiate playing career by earning consensus All-American and Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors as a 1983 senior.
- Rivera spent 36 seasons in the NFL as a player for Chicago (1984-92) and a coach (1997-2023) with stops in Chicago (twice), Philadelphia, San Diego, Carolina and Washington.

- Cal welcomes 55 new faces to its roster for the 2025 season, with 27 new members of the offense, 22 new defensive players and six new specialists.
 
Preseason Honors
- Cade Uluave leads the Bears in preseason recognitions with a Bednarik Award Watch List nod, and appearances on the Preseason All-American Third Team (Phil Steele, Preseason All-ACC First Team (Phil Steele) and Preseason ACC All-Conference Second Team (Athlon Sports)
- UNLV transfer WR Jacob De Jesus notched recognitions on the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, the Preseason All-ACC Third Team (Phil Steele), Preseason ACC All-Conference Punt Returner (Athlon)
- DL Aidan Keanaaina was named to the Preseason All-ACC Fourth Team (Phil Steele) and Preseason ACC All-Conference Fourth Team (Athlon Sports)
- TE Jeffrey Johnson is a 2025 Allstate AFCA Goodworks Team nominee and Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List member
