Spencer Steps Down As California Softball Coach

Former Golden Bear Shortstop Led Team To Three Straight NCAA Tournament Appearances

BERKELEY – Chelsea Spencer has stepped down as California's head softball coach, Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton announced Monday.

Spencer spent the past five seasons guiding the Golden Bear program, including NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the past three years. Cal's postseason berth in 2023 snapped a five-year drought.

Spencer was also an accomplished student-athlete for the Bears, helping Cal reach the Women's College World Series all four years of college, including an NCAA championship in 2002. Spencer helped the Bears reach the NCAA title game on two other occasions and led Cal to the 2005 Pac-10 championship. The Bears' starting shortstop for 277 consecutive games was named an NFCA All-American as a junior.

"We thank Chelsea for all of her contributions to Cal and wish her the best of luck for the future," Knowlton said.

Spencer compiled a record of 153-108-2 as Cal's head coach. In two of the three NCAA Tournament appearances during her watch, the Bears reached the regional final.

Assistant coach Jen Deering has been named interim head coach. A national search for a permanent replacement will begin immediately.
