Overbeck, Stepanov Claim ITA Regional Awards
To cap a superb 2024-25 season, the California men's tennis team earned two ITA Northwest Regional accolades when the collegiate tennis governing body honored
Carl Emil Overbeck (Most Improved Player) and
Timofey Stepanov (Player to Watch) on Tuesday.
Â
Overbeck completed his best and final season as a Golden Bear with a singles All-America honor, a spot on the All-ACC First Team for singles a No. 15 singles ranking in the last ITA poll of the year. He also paired with
Theo Dean to finish 36th in the last doubles poll. The Copenhagen, Denmark native produced a 26-11 singles record, including a 9-8 mark on court one. He won his last match – a comeback, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 effort against 20th-ranked Rudy Quan – in Cal's NCAA Championship second-round match against UCLA. In the fall, Overbeck was the fourth seed in the NCAA Singles Championship and won the singles title in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Overbeck defeated several ranked opponents as a senior, including then-No. 1 Ozan Baris of Michigan State in September en route to capturing the title at the Battle in the Bay Classic. Overbeck and Dean competed in the NCAA Doubles Championship in November and were 2-0 in the NCAA team tournament in May, with the Bears defeating the Bruins' Giacomo Revelli and Alexander Hoogmartens 6-3 in their last match together in Berkeley.
Â
Stepanov, from Lugano, Switzerland, competed in the NCAA Singles Championship and was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team in a strong sophomore season. He clinched three straight Cal victories late in the year, beating Georgi Georgiev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a 4-2 win at No. 61 SMU, topping Connor Krug 6-7(1), 6-2, 6-4 in a 4-3 triumph over No. 15 Duke, and besting Diego Jarry 6-1, 6-2 to blank No. 47 North Carolina 4-0 in the regular-season home finale at the Hellman Tennis Complex. In the fall, Stepanov won a playoff match over UCLA's 104th-ranked Aadarth Tripathi 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the ITA West Sectional Championships to qualify for NCAA singles, which marked his first trip to the individual postseason tournament, and posted a record of 22-11.
