BERKELEY - The California lacrosse team returned to home turf Saturday for an ACC matchup against Syracuse in its penultimate regular-season home game at Memorial Stadium, with the Golden Bears falling to the Orange 18-6.
Cal's record now stands at 5-8 (0-7 ACC). Syracuse is 9-5 (5-2 ACC).
Within seconds of the opening draw,
Courtney Wong scored the first goal for the Bears with 14:43 left in the first quarter. Syracuse then scored five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead, but
Avery Hoeft was able to put a stop to the streak and make the score 5-2.
Kennedy Mason scored two goals in the second quarter, and the Bears trailed at halftime 9-5
Cal's defense was unable to stop Syracuse in the third quarter.
Alyssa Studdert scored a goal in the fourth quarter, with an assist by
Belle Tiesi.
Goalkeeper Callan Fritch made nine saves for the Bears.
Syracuse midfielder Caroline Trinkus scored her game high fourth goal in the second half.
The Bears ended the match by celebrating the four seniors on the team - Fritch, Tiesi, Mason and
Kalena Johnson.
Cal will next play the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on April 11th.
