SANTA CLARA – The California softball team (31-16) came out victorious in the 3-2 contest against Santa Clara (27-17) on Tuesday at SCU Softball Stadium.
Elon Butler and
Kaylee Pond led the way for the Golden Bears with a pair of hits, while Pond recorded two doubles. With one double today,
Acacia Anders has tied the all-time mark in program history with 50 career doubles. Anders has tallied 15 doubles this season, four away from the single season record she set a year ago.
The Bears struck first in the first inning after
Elon Butler crossed home plate after
Tianna Bell reached first base on a fielder's choice.
In the third inning, Cal put two runs on the scoreboard, beginning with an RBI triple from
Lagi Quiroga. Anders quickly followed in the next at-bat with a double to right-center field to score a runner from third to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage.
Ryann Orange held the Broncos scoreless after four innings of action. Santa Clara tacked on a run on the scoreboard in the fifth after a base hit from Rebecca Rubio to cut into its deficit.
The Broncos made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh after narrowing the score to 3-2 with two outs.
Miranda De Nava managed to fend off the late rally to help the Bears secure the victory.
Orange earned her eighth win after throwing 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. De Nava secured the save after 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and giving up only one hit.
