No. 18 Cal Beats No. 34 Wake To End Regular Season
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 18 California women's tennis team closed the regular season in fine fashion Sunday, with
Mao Mushika clinching a 4-1 ACC victory at No. 34 Wake Forest.
Â
Cal improved its record to 12-7 (9-3 ACC). Wake is now 14-12 (3-9).

The Golden Bears' 10th-ranked tandem of
Mao Mushika and
Jessica Alsola dominated a 6-1 win over Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum on court one to start doubles.
Lan Mi and
Naomi Xu clinched the doubles point for the Bears with a 6-2 victory over Jinyi Li and Makayla Mills on court three.
In singles, 38th-ranked Alsola fell to Anna Zhang 6-3, 6-0 on court two to tie the score 1-1. But freshman
Greta Greco Lucchina quickly untied the match when she bested Mills 6-0, 6-2 on court six to give Cal a 2-1 lead.
Katja Wiersholm, ranked 71st, then triumphed 6-2, 6-2 over Sankavi Gownder on court five to make the score 3-1. Mushika, ranked 39th, ended the match when she defeated Carton 6-1, 6-3 on court one.
"I was most pleased to see how we came out in the doubles today," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "That was really important, and we carried the momentum from the doubles into the singles. Now that we're transitioning into the postseason, the rest of the matches are going to be clinch-clinch, which we played today. To be able to practice closing out matches in a clinch-clinch format was good for us. The team did a good job of that and we were in control on pretty much every court."
Â
Cal next plays in the ACC Championship at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina. The Bears – who earned byes in the first two rounds of the conference tournament – will play Thursday at 7 a.m. PT against the winner of the Wednesday match between 12th-seeded Louisville and 13th-seeded Florida State. The winner of that third-round match advances to face fourth-seeded Virginia in a quarterfinal Friday at 7 a.m. PT.
