CLEMSON, S.C. – Lagi Quiroga went 5-for-6 over two games and
Tianna Bell hit a solo home run in each game but the California softball team was swept by Clemson in an ACC doubleheader on Saturday at McWhorter Stadium.
The Tigers won each game in walk-off fashion, prevailing 2-1 in the opener and then finishing off a 14-4 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.
The Golden Bears (25-10, 6-6) looked in position to win Saturday's opener behind a strong starting pitching performance by freshman
Miranda De Nava, who was on the doorstep of her first career shutout leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Down to their last strike, the Tigers responded with a two-run single by Macey Cintron with the bases loaded to hand Cal a heartbreaking defeat.
The Bears had taken a 1-0 lead on Bell's leadoff homer in the second inning.
Clemson roughed up Cal to begin the nightcap, scoring 10 runs and sending 13 batters to the plate in the first inning. The Bears responded with four runs over the next two innings to stabilize things, highlighted by Quiroga's two-run double in the second and another leadoff homer by Bell in the third.
The Tigers ended it with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.
Saturday's doubleheader ended a 10-day, eight-game East Coast road trip for the Bears, who return home for a nonconference game against Nevada on Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.
