Bears Fall To No. 21 Notre Dame

Moes Scores Career-High Four Goals In Defeat

BERKELEY – Sophomore Emily Moes scored a career-high four goals and Katie Bloomer notched her first career score, but the California lacrosse team fell to No. 21 Notre Dame 15-8 on Thursday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium.

The Fighting Irish got off to a fast start, scoring three goals during the first minute of play. Notre Dame eventually established a 5-0 lead but the Golden Bears (3-5, 0-4 ACC) began to mount a comeback. Moes, who is now tied for the team lead with 17 goals on the season, scored her first of the game with just over four minutes left in the first quarter off an assist from Bloomer. After the Fighting Irish answered with another score, Moes found the back of the net again and junior Avery Hoeft followed with a goal of her own to cut the deficit to 6-3 early in the second quarter.

Notre Dame had another answer, stringing together six straight goals to take command midway through the third quarter. But Cal found another gear again, scoring four consecutive times to trip the Fighting Irish's advantage to 12-7 at the 7:34 mark of the fourth period. The Bears couldn't get any closer.

Moes, who scored one goal in 13 games last season as a freshman, is tied with senior Kennedy Mason for the Cal scoring lead.

Bloomer's first collegiate goal came late in the third quarter and began the Bears' run of four unanswered scores to cut into Notre Dame's 12-4 advantage. Bloomer, Mason and Hoeft each finished with a goal and an assist.

Cal returns to action Monday with a neutral site nonconference game against Marist at USC. First draw is scheduled for Noon PT.
