CATHEDRAL CITY – The California softball team earned a pair of wins on the third day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic after defeating Seattle (4-2) and LMU (8-0) on Saturday at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.
The Golden Bears improved to 9-4 on the season behind stellar pitching and a walk-off by
Carly Raven to rule-run the Lions in the second game of the day.
Game 1: Cal – 4 | Seattle – 2
The Bears got going early with base hits by
Lagi Quiroga and
Elon Butler to open the bottom of the first inning.
Kaylee Pond drilled a two-RBI single down the right field line to bring both runners across home plate. In the second inning, Cal added another run on the board, extending the lead to 3-0, as the Redhawks focused on getting a runner out a second.
The Redhawks cut its deficit to one after putting two runs on the board in the top half of the third inning due to a pair of errors by the Bears to give them life.
Ryann Orange took the mound in the frame and tallied back-to-back strikeouts to retire the side. Cal added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning due to a sacrifice fly by
Kaylee Pond en route to earning the victory.
Orange held the Lions scoreless through 4.2 innings of action, earning three strikeouts and surrendering only one hit.
Game 2: Cal – 8 | LMU – 0
The Bears took a two-run lead after the first inning once again after
Acacia Anders blasted a two-RBI double to left field. Cal added more pressure on the Lions after tacking on two more runs in the third inning.
Kaylee Pond executed a sacrifice bunt as
Elon Butler reached home to extend the lead to 3-0. Later, Anders made it across home plate after
Alyssa Herrera grounded out to third base.
Nailyn Marshall made it a five-run game after launching a solo home run to center field, giving the Bears a commanding lead. Cal continued to pull away in the fifth inning when
Tianna Bell knocked in an RBI single to give the Bears a 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded,
Harmony Andrade forced a walk to tack on the seventh run of the game. Coming in as a pinch hitter and the bases still loaded,
Carly Raven notched her first hit of the season to bring the game-winning run across home plate to give the Bears the run-rule walk-off win.
Ryann Orange and
Anna Reimers combined to pitch a shutout as Orange earned her third win of the season.

Cal will conclude its appearance at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic against Northwestern tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. PT.
