Cal Comeback Bid Falls Just Short In 6-4 Loss To Houston

PJ Moutzouridis’ Long Drive Caught In Deep Centerfield To End The Game

BERKELEY – The California baseball team (3-2) got the game-winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Golden Bears' comeback bid fell just short in a 6-4 loss to Houston (3-1) on Friday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium in the opener of a three-game nonconference series.

The Golden Bears trailed 6-0 after four-and-a-half innings and were still trailing 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Houston reliever Richie Roman retired the first two Cal hitters he faced before Matthew Thomas started a rally with a two-out line drive single to left field. Seth Gwynn followed with another two-out single to bring Jarren Advincula to the plate as the tying run. Advincula popped the first pitch he saw high into the sky, but Cougar third baseman Jackson LaLima dropped the ball to allow pinch-runner Elijah Clayton to score, while Gwynn moved to third and Advincula would up on second. Roman then fell behind two balls and no strikes to PJ Moutzouridis before the Golden Bear preseason All-American candidate launched a long drive that fell just short of the fence into the glove of Houston centerfielder Tre Broussard.

David Shaw struck out six over a career-high 5.0 innings of scoreless one-hit relief for the Bears after Houston had taken the lead with a pair of three-run innings in the third and fifth frame off Cal starter and losing pitcher Austin Turkington (0-1).

Houston starter and winning pitcher Ryan Dollar (1-1) faced a minimum 12 batters over the first four innings before Dominic Smaldino started the bottom of the fifth inning with a high fly ball that carried over the left field wall. Dollar ended up allowing two runs and one earned run on three hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Roman earned his third save of the season by getting all three outs in the ninth as Houston's fourth and final pitcher.

Cal and Houston continue their three-game series Saturday at Stu Gordon Stadium with first pitch at 2 p.m. PT. The Bears are scheduled to start RHP Gavin Eddy (0-0, 2.25) on the mound while Houston will counter with RHP Paul Schmitz (1-0, 3.00).
