Cal Falls To Nevada, 10-1

Cade Campbell (2-4, RBI) Stays Hot Despite Only Five Hits For Golden Bears

BERKELEY – After winning each of the first two games of the series in dominating fashion, the California baseball team (2-1) had the tables turned on it Sunday when Nevada (1-2) posted a 10-1 victory over the Golden Bears at Stu Gordon Stadium.

The Wolf Pack scored four times in the top of the third inning and never looked back. Jayce Dobie got Nevada on the board with a two-out RBI triple in the third before Sean Yamaguchi followed with a three-run homer off losing pitcher Oliver de la Torre (0-1) that put Nevada ahead 4-0. De la Torre retired the first seven batters he faced in the game before walks to Billy Hamm and Jack Metcho earlier in the third set the stage.

Nevada extended its lead to 6-0 when Michael Ball touched reliever Logan Piper for a two-run, two-out blast to give the Wolf Pack their first six runs after two were out.

Nevada scored another run in their half of the fifth when Yamaguchi singled to lead off the inning and later came around to score on Ryan Spalliero's first of two wild pitches.

While Nevada scoring runs on offense, the Wolf Pack's starting pitcher and winner Casey Burfield (1-0) retired 14 of the first 15 Cal hitters he faced and did not allow a hit until a two-out single by Cade Campbell in the bottom of the fifth.

Burfield (5.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) would leave after five scoreless innings and 60 pitches before three Wolf Pack relievers – Ian Hughes, Daniel Tovar, Ethan O'Neale – closed the door by holding the Bears to a single run and three hits over the final four frames.

Nevada would score two more runs in the sixth on Spalliero's second wild pitch and a bases loaded walk issued by his successor Kaden Taque, who would get out of the inning without allowing any more runs by striking out back-to-back batters with the bases still juiced.

Cal finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Campbell singled home pinch-runner Elijah Clayton with two outs.

Nevada closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Metcho..

Yamaguchi (3-5, HR, 3 RBI) was the only player with more than one hit for the Wolf Pack but six of their other eight starters had one.

Cal was held to five singles with Campbell (2-4, RBI) the only player with more than one. The Bears' starting third baseman continued his torrid start in 2025 and is now leading the team with a .455 (5-11) batting average, two homers and eight RBI.

Neither team committed an error.

Cal and Nevada close out the four-game series at Stu Gordon Stadium on Monday. First pitch is scheduled at 2 p.m. PT on ACCNX/ESPN+.
