BERKELEY –Â
Liz Klompmaker scored both goals – including the game-winner less than two minutes into sudden victory overtime – and the California field hockey team won its season opener on Sunday afternoon, defeating Michigan State 2-1 at Underhill Field.
Klompmaker, playing in her first collegiate game, tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal in the third period. The Bears held the Spartans scoreless after the midway point of the second quarter, sending the game into extra time with stout defense.
Klompmaker then ended it at 1:57 into the first overtime period, off an assist by graduate transfer
Canisha van Duyn.
"We hoped she was bringing an advanced game here and she showed that today," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey
Shellie Onstead said. "She does have a couple of weapons. She got it done."
Cal put a lot of pressure on Michigan State's half of the field, outshooting the Spartans 20-10. The Bears also had 12 penalty corners.
Goalkeeper
Tina Jolly made five saves to spearhead Cal's suffocating defensive effort. van Duyn added two defensive saves.
"It's really fun to play with these girls, and I feel like we've been really working toward this," Klompmaker said. "It was great to see the results come together today. You could feel the energy, on and off the field."
Klompmaker took nine shots while fellow freshman
Maya Hoepfner reeled off seven to combine for 16 of the team's 20 shots.
The Bears continue their four-game homestand to open the season Thursday when they host Northeastern at 4 p.m. at Underhill Field.
