Cal Duo Helps Team USA Win 4x100-Meter Freestyle Relay In Paris
PARIS – It was a Golden Bear affair on the podium at the Paris La Defense Arena on Saturday, as rising senior Jack Alexy and Hunter Armstrong, a member of California's postgraduate training group, won gold medals as members of the United States' men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team.
They were the first gold medals for Cal's 59-member Olympic contingent in Paris, and the second and third overall medals.
Alexy, competing in his first Olympic event, swam a leadoff leg 47.67 to put the Americans in solid position in second place. After Chris Guiliano clocked 47.33 on the second leg, it was Armstrong who stole the show with an eye-popping 46.75 split that gave the USA the lead. Caeleb Dressel anchored a 47.53 to clinch the gold medal for the USA.
"I definitely didn't expect it," Armstrong said in an interview following the race. "I just went in, I will give my entire body and soul up for these boys. I knew I had to give Caeleb everything I had, so I was glad I was able to get my job done."
Armstrong also swam on the Americans' 4x100m free relay prelim, splitting 47.50 on the third leg to help Team USA finish 3:12.61 and take the fourth seed into the final.
"Truly honored to be part of this relay and watching Caeleb finish that off for us and making Team USA proud," Alexy said in an additional interview following the race. "And starting off night one with a gold."
