BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cal lacrosse team (2-5) picked up goals from nine different players in a 14-3 victory over Winthrop on Sunday at California Memorial Stadium.
Josie Lillquist had the first hat track of her career to lead the Golden Bears.
Kennedy Mason,
Addie Fischer and
Belle Tiesi added a pair of goals each, while
Kennedy Goss,
Isabel King,
Jane Middleton,
Caroline Roxas and
Mya Wang had one each.
Mason and
Emily Moes also had two assists apiece, while Tiesi,
Annette Ciupek and
Avery Hoeft recorded one.
Three Cal goalkeepers –
Callan Fritsch (43:01, 2 GA, 6 SV),
Alicia Souliotis (12:58, 1 GA, 1 SV) and
Chloe Rand (4:01, 1 SV) combined to limit the Eagles (0-6) to three goals.
Kalena Johnson and
Courtney Wong co-led the Bears with five draw controls each, while
Sydney Southworth paced the squad with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Winthrop's Katie Witmer needed just 56 seconds to score the game's first goal when she tallied unassisted but the Bears would register the next eight and were in control throughout the contest, finishing with dominant advantages in shots (35-14) and shots on goal (25-11) while also winning the draw control battle (13-8),
"I'm proud of our team and their effort this week," said Cal head coach
Jennifer Wong. "We've worked hard to correct some of our errors and executed better today. Our defense was strong all day and our offense found its stride as the game progressed. We are happy to get the win and hope we can use it to build momentum as we get closer to Pac-12 play."
The victory ended Cal's five-game losing streak.
Cal returns to action Tuesday when the Bears conclude their current five-game homestand against Butler. First draw is scheduled for 11 a.m. PDT.

- Both of Mason's goals came on free position shots for the first multiple free position goal game of her career, while she also tied career highs with two assists and four points
- Tiesi's three points were a career-high, while her two goals and one assist tied career bests
- Fischer tied her Cal career high with two goals
