Katja Wiersholm would qualify for NCAA singles with a Friday morning win in Rome.
ROME, Ga. – California women's tennis senior
Katja Wiersholm won twice on the first day of the ITA Conference Masters Championships on Thursday to reach Friday's singles quarterfinals at the Rome Tennis Center.
Â
The 33rd-ranked Golden Bear – who's seeded third – defeated Nevada's Amahee Charrier 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of 32. Wiersholm then beat Xavier's Madeleine Rexroat 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. She next plays UC San Diego's Julia Haynes on Friday at 7:30 a.m. PT.
Â
A quarterfinal win would qualify Wiersholm for the NCAA Singles Championship, as the four singles semifinalists from the ITA Conference Masters Championships advance to the postseason.
Â
LOS ANGELES – Two Golden Bears –
Lan Mi and
Mao Mushika – reached the singles quarterfinals of the ITA West Sectional Championships on Thursday as the tournament began at USC.
Â
As with Wiersholm, Mi and Mushika each won twice in their ITA tournament to advance to Friday's third round. Mi, a senior seeded second, defeated USC's Immi Haddad 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 32 and then beat Washington's 60th-ranked Reece Carter 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 16. Mushika, a sophomore ranked 107th, split the first two sets of her round of 32 match with USC's Janna Hossam. With the Bear and Trojan tied 5-5 in the third set, Hossam retired with an injury, and Mushika moved into the round of 16. Mushika then prevailed 6-4, 6-3 over Stanford's fifth-seeded and 77th-ranked Valencia Xu.
Â
In Friday's quarterfinals, Mi faces UCLA's fifth-seeded Kate Fakih at 8 a.m. PT and Mushika plays Pepperdine's Vivian Yang at 9 a.m. PT. A win in the quarterfinals would qualify either Bear for the NCAA Singles Championship.
Â
Cal's
Jessica Alsola and
Berta Passola Folch – ranked 30th and 106th, respectively – both fell in the singles first round and moved into the consolation bracket. Alsola ended her day with a 7-6(5), 6-2 loss to Arizona's Midori Castillo, while Passola Folch beat Arizona's Tanvi Narendran 6-3, 6-2 to advance. In Friday's consolation quarterfinals, Passola Folch plays Washington's 54th-ranked Alexia Jacobs at 9 a.m. PT.
Â
Doubles start Friday at sectionals, with the second-seeded Cal pair of Mi and Passola Folch playing Washington's 17th-ranked Carter and Jacobs at 11:30 a.m. PT in the opening round of 16. The top three duos at sectionals (champion, runner-up and third-place team) advance to the NCAA Doubles Championship, with both individual postseason tournaments slated for Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.
