Bears Pull Away From Aggies Late

Cal Scores Three Times In Fourth Quarter

DAVIS – The California field hockey team scored three goals in the fourth quarter – two from sophomore Morgan Kallmann, to defeat host UC Davis 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Aggie Field Hockey Facility.

Cal (6-7, 3-3 America East) scored the contest's opening goal in the fourth minute when Bente Baekers scored her 11th goal of the season. Through two and a half quarters the Golden Bears looked poised to make it a 1-0 victory before Daniella Rhodes notched her 11th goal of the season in the 48th minute. Kallmann put the game on ice scoring her first two collegiate goals four minutes apart, the second on a penalty corner.

"We've been looking for consistency, and today we put four quarters together," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. "It wasn't without some moments that happen naturally throughout the game. This is a game with a lot of runs – like basketball or soccer. One of the things we've been talking about all season is responding when the other team has the momentum. I felt like today we were better prepared at staying calm and keeping our composure. It was also really nice to see our bench perform. It was hot out here today and we had to go a little deeper into the subs and they performed. For Morgan to get two goals is awesome. It's not a surprise, just awesome. So, we are really proud of that."

UC Davis (2-11, 1-5 America East) scored its lone goal in the 50th minute when Zoe Mohrman scored off the feed from Shannon Lackey. It was Mohrman's second goal of the year. After falling behind early, the Aggies seized the momentum in the third quarter, outshooting the Bears 3-1. In the second half, they owned a 9-8 shot advantage.

Cal finished the afternoon with 17 shots – nine on goal. However, a bulk of that came in the fourth period when Cal took the momentum back. Taking seven shots to the Aggies five. Baekers, Rhodes, Holly Pears, and Kallmann all fired shots on goal in the period.

Defensively, the Bears were stingy, holding the Aggies to just 12 shots on the day, seven through three periods. Tina Jolly (6-7) got the win and finished with three saves. Maria Cambra Soler notched her second defensive save of the season. They also held the Aggies scoreless on all four of their penalty corners.

"This was a really critical game," Onstead said. "Every season gets to a point where you have to win and that was today for us. We just need to keep the momentum going through next week and into the final weekend of conference play in two weeks."

Cal returns home for its final home contest of the season next Saturday when UC Davis comes to Underhill Field for a non-conference clash. That game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. PT. Next Saturday will be Senior Day and there will be a special pregame presentation honoring the Cal's seniors.
