Cal Suffers Its Second Straight 1-0 Loss
LOWELL, Massachusetts - California was relentless with offensive pressure, but the Golden Bears couldn't get on the board, and UMass-Lowell defeated Cal, 1-0, Sunday afternoon from the UML campus.
The Bears fell to 1-3, 0-2 on the year.
The River Hawks got on the board in the first 30 seconds of the second quarter. The Bears responded with some pressure in the final 30 seconds of the first half, gaining multiple short corners, but couldn't convert.
"Another really close game, a good hockey game," said the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead. "It's a growth thing for us. We're young, and that's good. We're getting trial by fire. This is the first real-game pressure for a lot of the freshmen and even our sophomores who missed their developmental season a year ago. There's a learning curve and we're ok with it."
Cal out shot the River Hawks, 12-6, and earned six corners to two for UML.
"Compared to yesterday, we did a better job of being full-go from the start," Onstead said. "We played a bit rushed. There was plenty of time to build opportunities, but we'll get better as we go. There's more pressure because there's more at stake now, but we'll get better at handling that pressure."
Maddie Cleat led Cal in shots with five, two on goal.
Cato Knipping made four saves in goal.
Cal heads to Monmouth next for a match on Wednesday, March 24, at 10 a.m. PT. It will be a rematch of the 2019 America East Tournament semifinals.
