Cal Seeks To Improve Two-Game Friday Night Winning Streak At Home

BERKELEY - Cal football returns home on Friday night for a matchup with Pac-12 foe Arizona State at California Memorial Stadium The Bears are ranked No. 15/16 in the country after starting the year 4-0, most recently winning on the road at Ole Miss, 28-20. Cal is riding a two-game home winning streak in Friday night games and will look to continue their early season momentum against the Sun Devils. 

No. 15/16 CAL PREPARES FOR FRIDAY NIGHT TEST 
- With the Bears' 28-20 win at Ole Miss, Cal became the first Pac-12 team to win a road contest at an SEC school since Oregon defeated Tennessee, 48-13, in Knoxville during the 2010 season. 
- Cal concluded the non-conference portion of the team's schedule with a 3-0 record, the Bears are now 9-0 in non-conference games under Justin Wilcox. 
- This will be the 35th matchup between Cal and Arizona State, with Cal leading the series, 18-16. The Bears have won 6 of the past 7 contests vs. Arizona State at California Memorial Stadium.  
- Cal played two games on Fridays during the 2017 season. The Bears defeated Washington State, 37-3, at home on Oct. 13, but ended the season by falling to UCLA, 30-27, on Nov. 24. 
- The Bears have played 13 games on weekdays over the past 100 years and have a 6-7 record.
- Cal is 5-3 while playing on Friday over the past 100 years, including winning two of the past three. 
- The Bears are 2-1 at home on Friday over the past 100 years, but have won their last two vs. Washington State (2017) and Oregon. Cal defeated Oregon, 52-49, in overtime on Oct. 21, 2016.
- Cal has seven players on the team from the state of Arizona; Spencer Brasch (Gilbert), DeCarlos Brooks (Chandler), Braxten Croteau (Peoria), Brett Johnson (Phoenix), Ryan Puskas (Peoria), Brayden Rohme (Chandler) and Slater Zellers (Scottsdale).
- Arizona State head coach Herman Edwards attended Cal in 1972 and 1974, before finishing his collegiate career at San Diego State. 
- Edwards holds the Cal record for most interceptions in a game when he recorded four vs. Washington State on Nov. 16, 1974. He also is tied for eighth in school history, with Jaylinn Hawkins (2018) amongst others, for most interceptions in a season, recording six in 1974. 

OFFENSE STARTS EXPLOSIVELY AND TAKES CARE OF THE BALL
- Last season, Cal generated five or more explosive plays of 20+ yards in three of the team's 13 games, it did that in each of their first two games of the 2019 season. 
- Cal opened the season with seven explosive plays of 20+ yards vs. UC Davis. That was more than the Bears had in all but one game during the 2018 season (Oregon State, 8). 
- The Bears generated five 20+ yard plays in the win over No. 14/12 Washington.
- Cal notched four 20+ yard plays vs. Ole Miss, including a 60-yard TD pass from Garbers to Tonges.
- Cal is 11-11 in converting in the red zone, scoring seven touchdowns and hitting four field goals, including the game-winning 17-yard field goal to defeat Washington.
- Cal is one of 12 FBS teams who have scored on every trip to the red zone this season.
- Cal did not turn the ball over vs. Washington or North Texas, it was the first time the Bears recorded back-to-back zero turnover games since the final two games of the 2016 season. 
- The Bears have 0 or 1 turnovers in three of four games in 2019, they did that only four times in 2018. 

EVAN WEAVER: TACKLING MACHINE
- ILB Evan Weaver leads the NCAA in solo tackles (10.0) and total tackles (15.8) per game, he has 16 more tackles than the next most in the country. 
- With 22 tackles vs. Ole Miss, Weaver now has 11 straight games with 10+ tackles. 
- The 22 tackles vs. Ole Miss are a career-high for Weaver and tied with Jordan Kunaszyk (vs. UCLA, 10/13/2018) for the most in recorded school history.
- Weaver's 22 stops were the most against an SEC opponent by any defender in at least 15 years, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
- He stuffed Ole Miss' John Rhys Plumlee on a QB sneak from the 1-yard line as time expired to preserve the win.
- After his performance vs. UW where he notched 18 tackles, one TFL and one forced fumble. Weaver was named National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Award, Chuck Bednarik Award, the Nagurski Trophy, College Sports Madness and he was the Reese's Senior Bowl Defensive Senior-of-the-Week and the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week.
- Weaver has 40 total tackles in Cal's two road games vs. Washington and Ole Miss. 
- Weaver was named a 2019 preseason first-team All-American (Athlon), and a second-team All-American (AP, The Athletic, PFF, Sports Illustrated). He is the first Cal player to earn first-team preseason honors since Jahvid Best in 2009.
- He has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Award, Butkus Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
- Weaver has moved past Eddie Walsh, Steve Hendrickson, Jordan Kunasyk, Majett Whiteside and Mychal Kendricks this season in to sixth place on Cal's all-time list. 
- He ranks eighth amongst all active NCAA student-athletes with 293 career tackles. 
- Weaver's 159 tackles in 2018 tied for second on Cal's all-time single-season list with David Ortega (1989). He trailed Hardy Nickerson's 167 tackles (1985).

DEFENSIVE LOCK DOWN
- Cal has held 11 straight opponents under 24 points, five of those have been held under 15 points and four did not score more than a single touchdown. This is the longest active streak in the country and tied for the longest since 2013. 
- The Bears are holding opponents to 17.25 points per game, despite going up against some high-scoring offenses. Cal's four opponents are averaging 37.33 points per game in all other 2019 contests, 20.08 more than they average against Cal's defense. 

GARBERS PUSHING BALL DOWNFIELD
- Garbers has led the Bears to an 10-4 record as the starting quarterback. 
- Garbers had a career-high in passing yards (357), touchdowns (4) and completions (23) vs. Ole Miss. 
- He notched three completions of 30+ yards in the season opener vs. UC Davis, after collecting only five passes of 30+ yards all of the 2018 season. 
- Garbers' five completions of 20+ yards vs. UC Davis was the most he's had in a game at Cal. He collected four explosive plays against Ole Miss and added two vs. both Washington and North Texas. 
- Garbers had nine completions for 15+ yards vs. Ole Miss, more than any game in his career. 
- Garbers is averaging 14.15 yards per completion (20th NCAA, 3rd Pac-12) after averaging 9.47 yards per completion in 2018 (110th NCAA, 11th Pac-12).

CAL JUMPS TO NO. 15 IN AP POLL 
- After starting the season with four straight wins, Cal moved up to No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll. It is the team's best start since 2015, when they started the year 5-0. 
- The Bears are one of 10 Power 5 (12 FBS) teams to start 4-0 and one of 17 Power 5 (23 FBS) unbeaten teams in the country. 
- The last time Cal earned a spot in the top 20 was during week 8 of the 2015 season, when the Bears were ranked No. 20/19.
- The last time Cal earned a spot in the top 15 was during week 4 of the 2009 season, when the Bears were ranked No. 6/6. That was also the last time that Cal was ranked in the top 10.
