Michigan Spoils Cal's Season Opener, 15-10

Susie Ropp Garners A Hat Trick In The Loss

BERKELEY - Cal continued its trend from 2018 with five different goal scorers composing the Golden Bears' 10 tallies on the night, but it wasn't enough for the Bears to win their season opener, as Michigan was victorious Friday night, 15-10, from California Memorial Stadium.

Susie Ropp garnered a hat trick, while Eliza Christman, Marisa Kuberra and Caroline Corzel each scored twice. Chirstman and Kuberra each tallied an assist to tie Ropp with three points on the night.

Michigan took control of the game early, scoring six of the first seven goals. The Bears stopped the scoring drought with a little run of their own, netting three of the final five goals of the half to trail, 8-4, going into the break.

Head coach Brooke Eubanks admitted it took her team a little time to get adjusted to the flow of the game, but she gave credit to Michigan and was also proud of the way Cal fought back throughout the game whenever Michigan had seized the momentum.

"Michigan is a very talented team," Eubanks said. "They're very athletic and aggressive. I think our team really battled. It took us a little bit of time to adjust to the flow of the game. The really great thing is we rebounded every time when we had a little bit of a lull. Unfortunately, if only we had more time, we really were on a roll. That shows a lot of positivity towards our future in terms of being able to end strong."

The second half progressed the same way the first half did with the Wolverines scoring in bunches at the outset, and the Bears clawing their way back into it late. Cal scored four times in the final five minutes, but just ran out of time.

Eubanks was also encouraged to see multiple goal scorers, as was the case last season.

"That's definitely my philosophy," she said. "I want opposing teams to not know who to mark and really have a tough time figuring out who the key offensive focal points are. It's really all of us. It's exciting to see that carry on tonight. That's going to help us be successful as we go through the season."

Defensively, Jenny Wilkens made seven saves in goal and tied Kendall Swenson in ground balls with four each. Wilkens now boasts 123 ground balls for her career, which ranks second in school history. Swenson was a force on defense. In addition to the four ground balls, she also paced the Bears with four caused turnovers and scooped up a draw control.

Kuberra was instrumental in Cal's attack tonight, notching team bests in ground balls (5) and draws (4), along with two caused turnovers to pad her stat sheet with her three points scored.

Cal returns to action on Sunday against Denver at noon from California Memorial Stadium.
