Aggies Sneak Past Bears In Shootout, 2-1

Cal Falls In Its First Shootout Of The Season

DAVIS, Calif. - The two 2019 meetings between California and UC Davis were both exciting contests that went down to the wire. While the Golden Bears were able to escape with an OT win in the first meeting earlier this season in Berkeley, it was the Aggies who prevailed on their home turf in the second meeting with a 2-1 victory Wednesday afternoon in Davis.

Cal ends the regular season with a record of 7-10, 1-3.

UC Davis earned the win with a 3-2 edge in a shootout. It was Cal's first shootout of the season, and its fourth overtime game in 2019. The Bears are now 2-2 this season in overtime games.

In the shootout, Megan Rodgers and Katrina Carter found the back of the cage to give the Bears an early 2-0 edge after Cato Knipping stopped the first two Aggies. But UC Davis tallied the next three successful makes to win the shootout, 3-2, and the game.

"It was what you would expect when you're facing a team that's facing elimination," head coach Shellie Onstead said. "I have confidence in our team in overtime and in shootouts, but Davis got it done today. We had plenty of chances to convert. During a shootout, I ask our goalies to just make two saves, and then if the offense takes care of business, it usually works out. We got our first two in and we felt pretty good, but you gotta tip your cap to Davis for finding a way."

After UC Davis scored in the first half, Rodgers scored with 90 seconds left in the third quarter to tie the game. Rodgers is now tied for fifth in school history in career points with 85. Her 42 career goals rank fourth in school history.

Onstead credited the play of her backfield for keeping the Bears in the game, especially in double overtime when Knipping had to make three saves, including an impressive double save.

"Yvie played a complete game, and she had to play a lot of minutes," Onstead said. "I don't think Femke ever came off the field. Nat got hurt and Cato stepped up really well. We went all in today, not making a lot of substitutions. We let the more experienced players be out there longer than usual. When you do that and go into overtime, you may have compromised things a bit. I had to ask them if they could go or not. They stepped up and played well in overtime."

The Bears now await the outcome of Friday's match between Stanford and UC Davis. A win for the Cardinal and the Bears are in the America East Conference Tournament next week. If UC Davis beats Stanford, then the Aggies clinch the second West division seed in the tournament.
