BERKELEY - In front of a raucous crowd at Underhill Field, California sent the lively crowd home happy when
Megan Rodgers slapped a shot in the cage to give the Golden Bears a 3-2 overtime win over UC Davis Friday night.Â
Cal improved to 7-8, 1-1 on the year. More significantly, the Bears are riding a three-game winning streak - and winners of four of their last five - into Tuesday's clash vs. No. 16 Stanford. In its last five games, Cal is outscoring its opponents, 22-7.Â
"I was expecting a battle. We tend to really go at it close with UC Davis," head coach
Shellie Onstead said. "I was telling the team beforehand that conference play is a whole different animal. Whatever happened beforehand (during the season) has been all about getting ready for this portion of the schedule. We've got pretty much everything in place now. I'm proud of them."
Megan Connors and
Katrina Carter scored the other Cal goals, while
Femke Delissen,
Lindsay Mathison,
Gabi Jimenez and
Brynn Zorilla all garnered assists.Â
After a scoreless first quarter, the Bears struck first in the second quarter when Connors tipped in a deflected shot from a penalty corner. Less than two minutes later, though, the Aggies tallied their first goal of the night, and the teams went into halftime tied at one.Â
At the outset of the third quarter, Jimenez stole a ball away from an Aggie, drove down field, found Carter on the baseline, and the senior standout whipped a shot in the top corner of the cage to give the lead back to the Bears.Â
UC Davis wouldn't trail for long again. Just 24 seconds later, a broken play resulted in a two-on-1 for the Aggies and Catherine Potente had an open lane to sneak a shot past
Natalie Dalton to tie the game again.Â
Both teams produced scoring chances in the final quarter in regulation, but Cal ventured into overtime for the third time this season. Three minutes into the first overtime period, Zorilla found an open Rodgers, and Cal's scoring leader slapped a shot past the Aggie goalie to give Cal its second overtime win this season.Â
"We've been working on overtime quite a bit this year," Onstead said. "We lost in overtime at the end of the year last year, so that was a big focus for us this year in how to be better prepared. We have a few really tactical, structural things in place. They were great tonight."
Cal out shot UC Davis, 15-6.Â
The Bears celebrated Senior Night before the game, as well as bringing back former players and welcoming all parents for Pack The Stands night. The seven seniors honored before the game were Carter, Delissen,
Fionna Jensen, Jimenez,
Kyra Kent, Mathison and
Danielle Mentink.Â
"It's alumni weekend, and it's usually a big night, but Senior Night falling on it at the same time is super cool," Onstead said. "It meant we could draw on it, and we needed it. At the start of the game, we were a little nervous and overwhelmed, but then we got on it. You only get an experience like tonight during your collegiate career so many times, so I wanted them to enjoy this."
Cal and Stanford meet at Underhill Field on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.Â
