Cal Shuts Out Sacred Heart, 6-0

Cal Has Outscored Its Last Three Opponents, 16-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - California scored twice in the first quarter and maintained control throughout Friday's contest as the Golden Bears shut out Sacred Heart, 6-0.

The Bears improved to 5-8 on the year. This also marked Cal's first shutout win of 2019 after posting three last season.

In its last three games, Cal has outscored its opponents, 16-4.

"This is the kind of game you hope for, in terms of a good bounce-back," head coach Shellie Onstead said. "A lot of the work we did after the loss yesterday was addressing the psychological issues of the letdown and the ability to overcome the frustration we were all feeling. As long as you can restart like this right away, I think that's the best thing we could have done."

The goal leaders for the Bears were at it again as Katrina Carter and Megan Rodgers each scored twice, while Lindsay Mathison and Monica Arteaga garnered the other Cal goals. Rodgers paced the Bears in points on the day with three as she also earned an assist. Brynn Zorilla contributed two assists, as well, while Maddie Cleat also notched one.

Cal made a statement early, scoring two goals in the first six minutes of the contest. Carter and Mathison tallied the two scores to give the Bears momentum early.

"That was a significant goal that we were hoping for," Onstead said. "Right from the moment you step out on the field, you have a statement you want to make. You have a message to deliver to your own teammates that there needs to be no let down."

Rodgers and Arteaga scored in the second quarter with Arteaga's goal coming with 30 seconds left before halftime. The Bears went into the break with a decisive 4-0 lead.

Carter and Rodgers tallied their second goals of the game in the second half to add to the lead.

Cal out shot Sacred Heart, 23-6.

The Bears close out the road trip against No. 24 Cornell on Sunday at 8 am PT.
