Bears Fall To Fourth-Ranked Terrapins

BERKELEY -- The fourth-ranked University of Maryland field hockey squad penalty corner advantage to shut out the Golden Bears, 5-0, Sunday at Underhill Field.

The Terrapins drew 10 penalty corners while the Bears earned none, with four goals coming off of corners.

Nike Lorenz (24', 44') and Linnea Gonzales (66', 66') each scored two goals for Maryland, and Sophie Giezeman scored off a corner in the 39th minute.

Cal goalkeeper Danielle Mentink tallied six saves including four in the first half, but Maryland's onslaught of 17 total shots, with many coming off of set plays during the 10 corners, were too much for the Bear defense to handle.

The Bears kept the game balanced in the first half, limiting Maryland to four corners and five shots through the first 35 minutes. Megan Rodgers turned in two close chances with a pair of shots that sailed wide, while Katrina Carter launched a laser toward the cage that Terrapin goalkeeper Noelle Frost scrambled to save. On the defensive end, Mentink made four saves to keep the score at 1-0 at halftime.

Maryland earned six corners and turned in 12 shots in the second half, scoring four of the team's five goals in the final 35 minutes. Melina Moore offered up the Bears' best scoring chance with a ball kicked away by Frost in the 42nd minute.

Rodgers finished the day with three shots, while Carter and Moore added to Cal's five-shot total.

Cal falls to 1-1 on the season.

HEAD COACH SHELLIE ONSTEAD'S TAKE

On performance overall:
I was pretty happy at halftime. We were hanging in. We came out and fought well after the break, and then there was a moment where we settled down and then there was an attitude where we stopped running so hard.  We were pretty successful pressing them and getting some sustained pressure, so I think that's something we can build on.

On corner advantage:
We could see that they scored most of their goals on corners in their first game. They have a world-class corner shooter, so our game plan was to try not to give up too many.
