Bears Renew Rivalry With No. 19 Stanford This Week
BERKELEY - The California women's lacrosse team looks to get back in the win column and keep its record above .500 this week when the Golden Bears head to Stanford to face the No. 19 Cardinal on Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m.
The Bears (4-4, 0-2 Pac-12) played their first two Pac-12 Conference games in school history last week, unfortunately, failing to pick up a win at Oregon or at then-No. 19 Colorado. The Ducks beat Cal, 12-7, while the Buffaloes topped the Bears, 15-5.
This week marks Cal's second straight game against a ranked opponent with No. 12 USC next up after Stanford.
Cal boasts 10 different goal scorers on the season, four with 10 or more goals and nine with four or more goals.
Meredith Haggerty became the 10th Bear to find the back of the net when she scored her first goal of the season at Oregon last Friday.
After posting three points at Colorado last Sunday with two goals and one assist,
Kirsten Swanson is the Bears' leading scorer with 23 points on 18 goals and five assists. She has also collected six ground balls and caused five turnovers.
Swanson has been consistent all year thus far. In addition to five-point outings against Mercer and UMass-Lowell, she has scored at least two goals in every game except one.
On defense, Haggerty ranks sixth in school history in career caused turnovers with 52, one shy of fifth. After causing two turnovers at Colorado last Sunday,
Elizabeth Koehler is two shy of cracking that same career list. As a team, Cal ranks third in the Pac-12 in caused turnovers this season (7.75 ctpg).
In goal,
Jenny Wilkens boasts 16 career double-digit save performances. She has stopped at least eight shots in 29 of her 41 career games played after making eight saves last Friday at Oregon. As a team, Cal ranks second in the Pac-12 in goals-against average (10.01) and third in save percentage (.463).
Wilkens' 102 career ground balls rank tied for fifth in school history, as well.
Stanford leads the all-time series, 31-6, and the Cardinal have won the last 15 consecutive meetings. The last time the Bears beat Stanford was on Feb. 23, 2008, an 11-9 win in Berkeley.
