California returns to Berkeley on Saturday to host UCLA for Homecoming Game and the Joe Roth Game.
Cal has won eight of its last games against UCLA in Berkeley dating back to 2000. Â Â Â
Jordan Kunaszyk ranks first in the Pac-12 in solo tackles per game (7.8) as well as fifth in the Pac-12 in total tackles per game (10.2). He is 24 tackles shy of 200 for his career.Â

Evan Weaver have combined for nearly a third of Cal's tackles (33.2%, 107-of-322). Their combined average of 14.2 solo tackles per game leads the nation.
Cal has allowed its first five opponents to score only 15 times in 64 drives (23.4 percent) and held Arizona without points over its final 10 drives last Saturday.
Patrick Laird is approaching 1500 career rushing yards and 2000 career all-purpose yards, needing 18 rushing yards and 74 all-purpose yards to pick up the milestones.Â
Cal is allowing 24.8 points, 155.8 rushing yards and 175.6 passing yards per game. Those numbers – all significantly lower averages than 2016, the last season before

Saturday's contest is the Joe Roth Game, named in honor of Cal's All-American quarterback (1975-76) who led the Bears to a co-Pac-8 Championship in 1975. Roth passed away from cancer in February of 1977.Â
Shut-Down Defense
The Bears have allowed its first five opponents to score on only 15 of 64 combined drives (23.4 percent). The 15 scoring drives have resulted in 11 touchdowns and four field goals. The Cal defense is currently and 331.4 yards of total offense and 24.2 points per game, which are its best marks for the since 2010 (319.1) and 2011 (24.2). Â

Jaylinn Hawkins picked off his third pass of 2018 at BYU after two vs. North Carolina. He ranks tied for fourth in the nation in interceptions with three. Hawkins co-leads the Pac-12 as one of four players to have two interceptions in a game this season.
Ashtyn Davis ranks tied for fourth in the Pac-12 with two interceptions. He is also third on the team in tackles with 18.
Camryn Bynum registered a career-high and game-high four pass breakups vs. North Carolina. After adding one more at BYU and an interception at Arizona, he ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in passes defended with six. Â

Evan Weaver and
Jordan Kunaszyk are Cal's leading tacklers this season with 56 for Weaver and 51 for Kunaszyk. They have both notched double-digit tackles four times with Weaver's streak spanning each of the first four games and Kunaszyk's current run each of the last four. Kunaszyk ranks first in the Pac-12 and second in the nation in solo tackles per game (7.8) and as well as fifth in the Pac-12 in total tackles (10.2). He is 24 tackles shy of 200 for his career. Weaver, who was added to the watch list for the Lott Impact Trophy two days before the Arizona game, set a career high with 14 tackles vs. Oregon, while tying with Kunaszyk at BYU with a game-high of 12. He boasted 13 tackles each vs. North Carolina and Idaho State to lead Cal in both contests. Weaver is fifth in the Pac-12 and 10th nationally in solo tackles (6.4) as well as third in the Pac-12 and tied for 14th nationally in total tackles (11.2). McIlwain Sets Career Highs At Arizona
Brandon McIlwain made his first start at quarterback at Cal last Saturday, and the fourth of his collegiate career including three as a 2016 true freshman at South Carolina). Cal has now started three quarterbacks in a season for the first time since 2005. McIlwain finished 32-for-43 for 315 yards (all career bests) through the air and rushed a career-high 20 times for 107 yards and two scores at Arizona. His TDs came on runs of 25 and 23 yards, giving him four rushing touchdowns this year. McIlwain's two rushing TDs are the most by a Cal QB since
Joe Ayoob rushed for three vs. New Mexico State in 2005. McIlwain also rushed for a career-high 123 yards vs. Oregon, the most by a Cal QB since Joe Kapp ran for 130 yards against Oregon in 1958. The 123 rushing yards are the most by a Pac-12 quarterback in 2018. One of his carries was a 28-yard touchdown run that was the longest of his Cal career. McIlwain is within two scores of Cal's single-season record for rushing TDs by a quarterback accomplished by
Davis Webb when he had six in 2016. McIlwain is Cal's leading rusher this season with 359 yards on 58 attempts. He is the top rushing quarterback in the Pac-12 (eighth overall) and 13th in nation (71.8 rpg).Â

Patrick Laird scored his second receiving touchdown of the season at BYU (25 yards) after he recorded a receiving and a rushing touchdown for the first time in his career in the season opener vs. North Carolina. Against Oregon, Laird notched his 11th career rushing touchdown and also completed his first career pass against the Ducks, becoming the fourth Cal player to complete a pass in 2018. The last time Cal had four or more players complete a pass in a season was 2013 (seven). Laird is second on the team in rushing with 81 attempts for 290 yards and two touchdowns, while he also boasts 90 yards on 15 receptions and two receiving TDs, His eight receptions at Arizona (34 yards) were a career high. Laird is approaching 1500 career rushing yards and 2000 career all-purpose yards. He needs 18 rushing yards and 74 all-purpose yards to reach those milestones. Laird is a national honors candidate and on the preseason watch list for numerous awards including those that recognize community service. Laird has an opportunity to become only the third two-time 1000-yard rusher in Cal history with the others Russell White (3) and Marshawn Lynch (2).Â
Davis Leads Pac-12 In Kick Returns, Bears Solid On Special Teams
Ashtyn Davis currently ranks first in the Pac-12 and 12th in the nation in kick return yardage (28.0 ypr). Davis returned his first kick return for a touchdown (89 yards) vs. Idaho State and ranks tied for second in the nation with his one kick return touchdown. Davis' combined kick return yards (308 yards) rank second in the Pac-12 and 24th in the nation. Davis shared the nation's lead in kick returns a year ago with 39 while ranking ninth in kick return yards (826) and 14th in combined kick return yards (826). His total kick returns and kick return yards in 2017 both rank third in Cal's single-season history. Davis' career kick return totals are 50 returns for an average of 22.7 ypr. As a team, Cal ranks 18th in the nation in kick return yardage (26.7 ypr). The Bears averaged 20.2 in 2017.In addition to Davis' numbers,
Jeremiah Hawkins returned a kickoff for a career-high 54 yards vs. Oregon. Cal also ranks third in the Pac-12 and 22nd in the nation in kickoff coverage (17.40 net average).
Vic Wharton III's punt return average this season of 7.2 ranks seventh in the Pac-12. He returned nine punts for 89 yards in 2017.Â
Wharton's career punt return totals include 34 returns for 221 yards (6.5).Â
