No. 8 Eagles Top Bears in OT
Moore, Rodgers Crack Program's All-Time Top 10 For Goals Scored
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Melina Moore and
Megan Rodgers both broke in to the program's all-time top 10 in scoring, but their combined three goals weren't enough to lift Cal field hockey over No.8 Boston College. The Eagles topped the Golden Bears, 4-3, with a sudden-victory goal in overtime Saturday afternoon at Syracuse's J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The senior Moore scored the first goal of the game to bring her career total to 26 goals, tying Melissa Nerone and
Shellie Onstead at 10th all-time for goals scored in the program record books. Sophomore Rodgers, who entered the game needing two goals to tie the record of 26, scored both of her goals in the second half. The brace marked her third multi-goal game of the season.
BC's Frederique Haverhals scored the golden goal at 75:35, sealing the win for the Eagles and notching a hat trick for the day.
The Eagles and Bears each attempted two shots in overtime, with one of Cal's shots by Rodgers saved by BC keeper Jonna Kennedy.
With the Bears leading 3-0 heading into the final 20 minutes, Boston College scored three unanswered in the second half to send the game into overtime.
Cal led 1-0 at halftime before Rodgers scored two goals in a four-minute span to give the Bears what looked like a comfortable lead.
The competition got heated entering the final 20 minutes of play. Haverhals scored her first goal of the day at 49:07, and just a minute later the Eagles added a goal by Carly Kauffman at 50:24. Within a 10-second span, both Kauffman and teammate Fusine Govaert were issued green cards.
With Cal still up 3-2, the Bears swapped goalkeepers, sending
Natalie Dalton in at the 51st minute. Dalton and the defense's efforts weren't enough to quell the rising Eagles as Haverhals sent her second goal of the day through at 56:26 to tie the game up, 3-3, and ultimately send it to extra time.
In the first half, Moore scored her second goal of the season and the 26th of her career at 27:13, assisted by teammate
Brynn Zorilla. The 1-0 Golden Bear score held through to halftime, giving Cal the lead despite a 6-4 shot advantage for the Eagles and four shots on goal by BC, all saved by goalkeeper
Danielle Mentink.
