BERKELEY -- Femke Delissen's second-half goal lifted California field hockey to its second consecutive shutout over UC Davis, 1-0, Friday night at Underhill Field.
Delissen's second-half heroics gave the Golden Bears the sweep in the 2018 series, marking the second consecutive season that Cal has swept UC Davis.
Cal goalkeeper
Danielle Mentink turned in her second complete-game performance in a row to earn her third shutout of the season. Mentink needed just one save for the day with support of her confident Cal defense.
Cal outshot UC Davis 16-4 and led 5-2 in corners, but the game proved to be much more even than the stats appeared. The Aggies' tempo threw the Bears off balance in the first half, and while UC Davis only took two shots, the Aggie defense limited Cal to only six shots despite a 2-0 corner advantage.
"They were getting wrapped up in their tempo, so we just talked about how to control tempo again at halftime," said head coach
Shellie Onstead. "We were going to need to take a lot more shots in order to get the conversion. We also talked about controlling what we can control."
The Bears settled in to their own pace after halftime, exploding for a  10-2 advantage in shots.
Delissen's goal at 53:44 came off a corner play. Though the Bears had a different play in mind, Delissen improvised when the execution of the original play failed and she found the back of Chelsea Bigelow's cage. It was the lone goal Bigelow allowed as the Davis junior tallied five saves on the day.
Megan Rodgers led with seven shots, including two on goal, and
Melina Moore tallied three shots.
The Bears improve to 6-9 on the season, and 2-2 in America East play.

HEAD COACH SHELLIE ONSTEAD'S TAKE
This is the game I expected from Davis last week, because I knew they would be difficult. They never give up, they play hard and I knew they were disappointed in their performance last week, so this didn't surprise me at all. My concerns with this team have been poor restarts -- after halftimes, beginning of the games, after timeouts. We were way better about that today, so I would say that's a plus. I also expected that the stats would look like this, but I knew it would be a close game. I'm glad we pulled it out. I'm happy to get through it and look ahead. There were some nice performances, but we need to possess the ball a little bit better on the field and not give them so many chances.

DELISSEN ON HER GOAL
53:44 -- It was a corner, and it was supposed to be a different corner, but the insert was a little bit bobbly. I stopped it myself instead of the stickstop
, and then I saw the first running coming out really hard. I changed direction of the ball, and then it came to my backhand, so I hit it in with my backhand to the far post.
