Shut-Down Defense

  • The Bears have allowed its first six opponents to score on only 21 of 86 combined drives (24.4%). The 21 scoring drives have resulted in 14 touchdowns and seven field goals. Cal is currently allowing 334.2 yards of total offense and 26.8 points per game, which are its best marks since 2010 (319.1) and 2011 (24.2). The Bears tied their season high with 6.0 tackles for loss for the third time this season against UCLA last Saturday. Evan Rambo notched his first career sack vs. the Bruins. 

Dynamic Duo At Linebacker

  • Evan Weaver and Jordan Kunaszyk are Cal's leading tacklers this season with 76 for Kunaszyk and 65 for Weaver. Kunaszyk has notched double-digit tackles in each of the last five games while and Weaver had four straight earlier in the campaign. Kunaszyk boasted a career-best 22 tackles last Saturday vs. UCLA, which equaled the most by a Cal player since Jerrott Williard collected 22 against USC in 1993. Kunaszyk leads the Pac-12 and is third in the nation in total tackles per game (12.7 tpg), along with a team-leading 5.5 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles (0.5 per game), which ranks tied for fourth nationally and tied for first in the Pac-12. He is also tied for nation's lead in solo tackles with 8.8 per game. Kunaszyk recorded his 200th career tackle against the Bruins and has 201 in his career. Weaver, who was added to the watch list for the Lott Impact Trophy, set a career high with 14 tackles vs. Oregon. He is fifth in the Pac-12 and tied for ninth nationally in solo tackles (6.3) as well as fourth in the Pac-12 and 18th nationally in total tackles (10.8). Kunaszyk and Weaver have combined to garner over a third of the team's tackles (34.9%, 141-of-404). Their combined average of 14.2 solo tackles per game leads the nation.

Individuals In Defensive Rankings 

  • Jaylinn Hawkins picked off his third pass of 2018 at BYU after two vs. North Carolina. He ranks tied for ninth in the nation in interceptions with three. Hawkins co-leads the Pac-12 as one of five players to have two interceptions in a game this season. Ashtyn Davis ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with two interceptions. He is also third on the team in tackles with 25. Camryn Bynum registered a career-high and game-high four pass breakups vs. North Carolina. After adding one more at BYU and an interception at Arizona, he ranks tied for fifth in the Pac-12 in passes defended with six. 

Laird Reaches Milestones

  • Patrick Laird eclipsed 1500 career rushing yards and 2000 career all-purpose yards against UCLA. His career totals now stand at 1576 and 2033.
  • Laird scored his second receiving touchdown of the season at BYU (25 yards) after he recorded a receiving and a rushing touchdown for the first time in his career in the season opener vs. North Carolina. Against UCLA, Laird notched his 12th career rushing touchdown. He has also completed passes against Oregon and UCLA, the fourth Cal player to complete a pass in 2018. The last time Cal had four or more players complete a pass in a season was 2013 (seven). 
  • Laird is the Bears' leading rusher with 98 attempts for 384 yards and three touchdowns, while he also boasts 137 yards on a team-high 27 receptions and two receiving TDs, His eight receptions at Arizona (34 yards) were a career high. In the 2017 meeting against Oregon State, Laird boasted career highs in rushes (33) and rushing yards (214) while scoring one touchdown on the ground. Laird has an opportunity to become only the third two-time 1000-yard rusher in Cal history with the others Russell White (3) and Marshawn Lynch (2). He needs another 616 yards in 2018 to accomplish the feat.

Davis Leads Pac-12 In Kick Returns, Bears Solid On Special Teams

  • Ashtyn Davis currently ranks first in the Pac-12 and 13th in the nation in kick return yardage (28.0 ypr). Davis returned his first kick return for a touchdown (89 yards) vs. Idaho State and ranks tied for third in the nation with his one kick return TD. Davis' combined kick return yards (308 yards) rank third in the Pac-12 and tied for 40th in the nation. Davis shared the nation's lead in kick returns a year ago with 39 while ranking ninth in kick return yards (826) and 14th in combined kick return yards (826). His total kick returns and kick return yards in 2017 both rank third in Cal's single-season history. Davis' career kick return totals are 50 returns for an average of 22.7 ypr. As a team, Cal ranks 24th in the nation in kick return yardage (24.4 ypr). The Bears averaged 20.2 in 2017. In addition to Davis' numbers, Jeremiah Hawkins returned a kickoff for a career-high 54 yards vs. Oregon. Cal also ranks third in the Pac-12 and 21st in the nation in kickoff coverage (17.27 net average). Vic Wharton III's punt return average this season of 6.2 ranks sixth in the Pac-12. He returned nine punts for 89 yards in 2017. Wharton's career punt return totals include 34 returns for 221 yards (6.5). 

Steady Improvement In Punts For Coutts

  • Steven Coutts' 73-yard punt in the second quarter vs. Oregon was a career best, tied for the seventh longest in school history, the longest by a Pac-12 player in 2018 and tied for the fifth longest nationally. It was also the longest punt by a Cal player since Bryan Anger had punts of 75 and 76 yards against Stanford in 2008. 
  • On the year, Coutts, a native of Brisbane, Australia, has punted 29 times for 1217 yards (42.0) with four 50-yard punts and 18 that have landed inside the 20-yard line. He ranks sixth in the Pac-12 this season with his 42.0 punt average. He punted a career-high eight times, including five inside the 20, vs. North Carolina for 269 yards, also a career best. In 2017, he punted four times for 168 yards.
