BERKELEY -- For the first time this season, California field hockey hits the road for a pair of matches in New England this weekend. The Golden Bears' first stop is at Goldberger Family Field on the Brown University campus in Providence, R.I., where they'll meet Bryant at 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET on Friday. Next up, it's a quick trip up I-95 to Boston to face Northeastern at 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET on Sunday.

The Bears look to even out their 1-3 start with a pair of wins this weekend to add to last Friday's upset of 22nd-ranked UMass, 2-1. Cal opened its 2017 campaign with ranked opponents in three of its first four games.

HEAD COACH SHELLIE ONSTEAD'S TAKE

"I know these coaches and they will be tough opponents. On the trip as a whole, it will be four halves of play and our biggest challenge will be to take what our first four games taught us and apply it to improvement."

NEED TO KNOW

• The Bears rank among the top 30 in the country as a team in defensive saves (22nd, 1) and in penalty corners per game (28th, 6.50).

• To date, Cal has outshot opponents 57-39. Cal's 57 shots are more than double its offensive production from the same period last year, when the Bears logged just 25 shots through the first four games.

• Melina Moore is within 10 goals of moving into the program's all-time top 10 in career goals scored. Moore has 17 career goals, nine away from tying Shellie Onstead (1980-82) and Melissa Nerone's (1979-82) 10th-best mark of 26 career goals.

• Eight different Bears have notched a goal or assist this season, led by freshman Megan Rodgers' five points on two goals and one assist.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS

• Last Meeting: W, 7-2, on Aug. 30, 2015
• Series: Cal leads, 2-0
• Streak: The Bears have met Bryant twice since 2012, taking both games in the series by outscoring the Bulldogs 12-2.
• MAAC Player of the Week Victoria Newbill owns a team-high five points, earning all five points with a pair of goals against Maine and Brown and an assist against Providence.
• Alex Neumann scored two goals in Bryant's win at Brown last week to earn MAAC Rookie of the Week.
• Emily Perryman, Floor van Dommelen, Madison Demand and Freya Ward have also scored goals for the Bulldogs.
• Goalkeeper Miranda Grundy has earned every start in the cage to date, recording a .500 save percentage with 19 goals against. Keeper Lyndsay Swanston has also seen time in goal, appearing in two games for just over 84 minutes and allowing 11 goals with eight saves.
• This is head coach Joppe de Vries' first season coaching at Brown after serving as an assistant at Maryland for four seasons.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

• Last Meeting: L, 3-2, in overtime on Aug. 28, 2016
• Series: Northeastern leads, 5-1
• Streak: Cal's lone win in the all-time series came in 2011.
• Jamie Bartucca and June Curry-Lindahl are pacing the Huskies with nine points apiece this season. Bartucca owns a team-best four goals and one assist, while Curry-Lindahl has three goals and three assists.
• Camille O'Conor has six points via three goals in 2017.
• Kellie Stigas, Laura MacLachlan and Ffion Thompson have also netted goals this year for Northeastern.
• Julia Ennis has started each game for the Huskies, tallying a 1.33 goals against average with just two goals allowed and five saves. Julia Gluyas has more minutes in the cage with 109, allowing five goals with four saves.

FROSH FACES

Cal's nine-member freshman class includes five international standouts, as well as Bay Area products Morgan Peterson, Sara Deck and Callie Rose Goodman. Rookie Megan Rodgers spent her summer playing with the USA FIeld Hockey U-19 squad. Four have made their Golden Bear debuts -- Rodgers, Goodman, Maddie Cleat and Valen Garraffo.

BEARS TABBED THIRD IN AE WEST

For the second consecutive season, the coaches of the America East have predicted a third-place finish for the Golden Bears (5 points) in the America East, just one point behind second-place Pacific (6 points). Stanford received three first-place votes to be named the favorite in the West, while UC Davis was tabbed last. In the East Division, Maine was predicted as the league's champion.

RED, WHITE, BLUE & GOLD

In addition to head coach Shellie Onstead and both assistant coaches Malachi Mahan and Austin Pile holding national team playing or coaching experience, the Golden Bears have a long pipeline of individuals associated with Cal field hockey playing or working with Team USA. This year, both Katrina Carter (U-21) and Megan Rodgers (U-19) played with Team USA's development squads.

INTERNATIONAL INFLUX

While field hockey remains a growing sport in the United States, it is well-known internationally, and the Bears are receiving the benefits of its international appeal. Among Cal's 24-woman roster, seven student-athletes hail from a country outside of the United States: Lindsay Mathison (Australia), Femke Delissen (Netherlands), Maddie Cleat (Scotland), Victoria Struys (Belgium), Yvie Lock (UK), Valen Garraffo (Argentina) and Natalie Dalton (Canada). In addition, Sterre van Ede was born in South Africa, Struys has double nationality with Belgium/France and Dalton lived in Ireland as a child.

NEXT UP

The Bears return to the Bay to open America East conference action on Saturday, Sept. 16 against Pacific. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Underhill Field in Berkeley.
