BERKELEY - California begins its home slate this Saturday by hosting Weber State after a thrilling 35-30 victory last Saturday at North Carolina to begin the 2017 season.
Weber State is the second of three consecutive non-conference opponents (also North Carolina and Ole Miss) that will mark first-time meetings between the schools.
Justin Wilcox picked up his first victory as a head coach in his debut in the role last Saturday at North Carolina. Seven of the last eight head coaches at Cal have won their first game with the Golden Bears.
Ross Bowers led the Golden Bears to the victory over the Tar Heels in his first collegiate start, completing 24 of 38 passes for 363 yards and four touchdown passes. The touchdown total is tied for first in the Pac-12 and tied for third in the nation with the 363 yards through the air better than last season's average of 358.8 passing yards that ranked fourth nationally.
Cal's defensive numbers of 30 points and 440 yards of total offense allowed were an improve- ment upon the team's final totals of 42.2 points and 518.2 yards allowed per game in 2016.
Vic Wharton III was responsible for three of Cal's six big plays (20 yards or more) against the Tar Heels. Wharton broke loose for a 67-yard touchdown reception that was the game's longest play from scrimmage, as well as 43 and 26 yard catches.
Patrick Laird (54-yard TD),
Tre Watson (21 yards) and
Jordan Duncan (20-yard TD) had the other three big plays that all came through the air. The Cal defense held North Carolina to only three big plays also all passes.
Devante Downs was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after registering 13 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss (-1 yard), one forced fumble that was recovered by
Tony Mekari and a critical interception at Cal's own 18 yard line on the final play of the first half that he returned 39 yards.
Cal forced three turnovers to take the turnover battle despite a pair of interceptions by Bowers with
Derron Brown forcing Cal's other takeaway with an interception.
Cal scored touchdowns on all three trips into the red zone and on its last two drives when the combined for 145 yards on 21 plays and took 9:20 off the clock.
