BERKELEY - California continues its three-game homestand Saturday by hosting Ole Miss after opening it with a win over Weber State last Saturday that followed a victory in its season-opener at North Carolina.
Ole Miss is the third consecutive non-conference opponent that will mark a first-time meetings between the schools. Cal is playing three straight home games for the first time since the first three games of the 2013 season (Northwestern, Portland State, Ohio State).
Cal last faced an SEC team in 2007 when the then-No. 12 Bears defeated then-No. 15 Tennessee at California Memorial Stadium, 45-31. The Bears are 4-10 all-time against SEC schools, including a 13-0 win over Alabama at the 1938 Rose Bowl.
Justin Wilcox has won his first two games as head coach for the Golden Bears. Five of the last eight head coaches at Cal have won their first two games with the Bears.
Patrick Laird had career highs in carries (12), rushing yards (191) and touchdowns (3) against Weber State last Saturday. His 191 yards rushing were the most by a Cal player since
Shane Vereen totaled 198 at Nevada in 2010.
Laird's efforts have contributed to 12 explosive plays (20 or more yards) from the line of scrimmage this season. He owns four of the 12 plays with three of those four resulting in touchdowns of more than 50 yards including the longest play of the season on a 73-yard run against Weber State.
Vic Wharton III also has four big plays with one a 67-yard touchdown reception at North Carolina.
After allowing 42.6 points last season, Cal's defense has allowed an average of only 25.0 ppg in the first two games of the 2017 campaign. The Cal defense has only allowed 13 points combined in the second half of its first two games this season.
Cal has a plus-three turnover margin with its six turnovers forced ranking tied for third in the nation.
Both Cal wins have been fourth-quarter comebacks, overcoming three-point deficits in each.
Cal received two votes in the AP Top 25 in the latest Week 3 rankings while also receiving two votes in the Week 2 AP Top 25 and five in the Amway Coaches Poll.
